Los Angeles, CA – State regulators refused to revoke an Orthodox temple's permit to use an Eruv – strand of fishing line to create a symbolic religious boundary over surrounding beach communities – despite concerns from conservationists it could threaten birds.

The California Coastal Commission voted 7-4 to uphold the permit granted to the Pacific Jewish Center in Venice in the spring.
In doing so, the panel rejected the appeal of an environmental group that contends the line through several miles of prime beachfront would harm birds, including the endangered terns.
The line "is almost invisible, and where it is strung without being near power lines it will cause bird deaths," said Diana Spielberger, an attorney with the Coastal Law Enforcement Action Network.
The synagogue has offered to hang reflective streamers in some places so that the birds do not run into the line. [AP]
To Bigwheel: No person or group, jewish or otherwise, should be permitted to run 200 lb. test fishing line down the beach above the sand. The 20 foot high poles alone are unsightly. If the wire cannot be seen, it creates a hazard for birds (such as endangered least terns). If streamers are placed on the wire so birds can avoid it, the wire becomes even more unsightly. Moreover, the eruv itself is a scam, which many observant jews do not buy. It is a fiction created by supposedly observant jews to avoid the proscriptions of the sabbath. By the way, I am not jewish according to your racist beliefs as my mother was christian and I did not convert under orthodox law. Attorney

“If the lines are just symbolic & nearly invisible”. a) They are more than just symbolic. They are demarcation lines of what is “Symbolically” Private Domain; b)The “NEARLY INVISIBLE” part is done for the edification of all those Gentle Souls who cry about preserving the BEAUTY OF THE BEACHES,& property values.
If the lines are just symbolic and nearly invisible, what’s the purpose? Why don’t you just pretend the Eruv is there? This way no one is bothered.
Proves my theory of a previous post. Without fail, in every community and in every State, where building & implementation of an ERUV has been attempted, the primary and most vocal opponents have been unaffiliated/alienated Jews, who, under various pretexts
(environmental, property values, etc.)raised objections and put obstacles in the way. The name of the attorney is indicative of same.
