City Department of Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan had wanted to reduce the hours some time ago, but Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, who has long opposed banning cars from Prospect Park because of concerns about traffic backups south of the park, scuttled the plan.

But now Prospect Park motorists will get limited access similar to those who use Central Park.

Beginning Monday, cars will be banned from using Prospect Park's East Drive from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

That means cars will now only be allowed on the East Drive during the morning rush, from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and on the West Drive during the evening rush, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

DOT officials said they decided to change Prospect Park's hours after studies concluded that banning cars on its East Drive in the evening would not cause delays.

Markowitz said he had "assurances from the commissioner that the DOT will, as they always do, monitor the impact of this change and its effects on our neighborhoods and individuals who depend on these roads for vital transportation needs." [nydailynews]
