Wast Palm Beach, FL – An 82-year-old man charged with shooting another man outside a synagogue on Rosh Hashanah is competent to stand trial, a judge ruled.
Judge Lucy Chernow Brown signed an order that said Marc Benayer could be tried on first-degree murder charges.

Benayer is accused of fatally shooting Jonathan Samuels, 44, as he left a Rosh Hashanah service at the Chabad Weltman Synagogue near Boca Raton in October 2005. Samuels died in July 2006.
''Having thus considered all the evidence on this issue, the court finds that the evidence establishing the defendant's competency to stand trial greatly outweighs any evidence to the contrary,'' the judge wrote. [miamiherald]

My brother was davening there at the time of the shooting. The shooter was upset at the victim, because he claimed that the victim helped break up his relationship with his girlfriend.

My brother convinced the shooter to give up the gun after the shooting. He was also accused of trying to hire a hitman to kill his lawyer.
