Rockland County, NY – Philip Soskin, a longtime Democratic Party loyalist who represents District 7 in the county Legislature, finds himself challenged by a 19-year-old political beginner.

The challenge will likely help Soskin, 74, engage more with constituents, but will probably not get in the way of a Nov. 6 victory.
Republican Israel Barouk's energy doesn't quite make up for his lack of experience.

Soskin said he struggles with the county's sales tax, because all people, whether wealthy or poor, pay the same. But it brings in money when shoppers come from outside the county, and a percentage is shared with the towns and villages.
Barouk had nothing to add to discussions on taxes and budgeting.
But Barouk, commented about Soskin's demeanor and ties to Kaser, the Hasidic community in Ramapo where votes tend to go overwhelmingly to one candidate. District 7 includes parts of Kaser, Monsey, New Hempstead, Wesley Hills and Spring Valley.

Soskin shrugged off the criticism, noting that all people have a right to get out the vote. "They have a right to choose the way they want to live," he said. [journalnews]

I agree. Mike Koplen was by far the best Jewish politician we have had. Clean and honest and down to earth. Too bad he doesn’t run for more offices. I guess its too disgusting to him.

your nuts. Mike campaigns really hard how do you think everyone knows him? Of course Phil is good too I saw him yesterday at a ground braking for a shul but I didn’t see Mike. I think if we could get Mike Koplen and Phil together we would have a very fine govermnet.

Phil is a good man, with years of service to the community, Let this young kid grow up, get a job maybe get married and then come back to us, I would not let a 19 Y.O. with no life expeince run my business, and i sure hire him as county legis. Huge difference between Mike and him.
PS Mike is a lazy person who never campaingned

Soskin will win because he will get the bloc vote from Vishnitz. In the district, the bloc vote controls. A few years ago in the last election Soskin was challenged by Mike Koplen, a former Legislator and very popular Republican. Koplen beat Soskin 2 to 1 in all districts but the bloc vote went 100% for Soskin about 2000 votes and on this he beat Koplen. Unfortantely the young kid running this year has no chance due to the bloc vote power.
