Lieberman received the campaign cash in 2003 before businessman James Galante was indicted in a federal investigation of the mob’s influence of the trash hauling industry in western Connecticut and upstate New York.

The contributions came from Galante, his associates and their relatives. In addition to federal racketeering charges, Galante is accused of violating state campaign finance laws by funneling personal contributions to other politicians through his associates to avoid contribution limits.

Lieberman’s office says it has been contacted by the FBI and federal prosecutors about the donations made to his presidential campaign. Lieberman spokesman Rob Sawicki says no one involved with the campaign knew about any improprieties and the senator will donate the contributions to charity if investigators determine any laws were broken.
