Prime minister sends message to Syrian president through visiting US senator en route to Damascus, says Israel still waiting for Syria to respond to its peace overtures.

Specter said Israel will have to return the Golan Heights for peace, adding that the United States has the potential to ”bridge the gap” between Israel and Syria, who have not held peace talks since 2000.

Specter, a Republican from Pennsylvania, and Rep. Patrick Kennedy, a Rhode Island Democrat, held talks with Syrian President Bashar Assad on the last day of their two-day visit to Damascus.

Specter said he had the impression from the meeting that the time was very ”positive for productive talks between Israel and Syria.”

”There is a sense that he (Assad) is ready and the Syrian public opinion is ready (for peace),” Specter said. [ynet]

Spector is not the only Jew who believes that Assad wants peace. Many leaders in the Syrian Jewish community have also met with Assad and feel that he wants peace.

Jews lived in peace and prosperity in Syria for thousands of years. The past 60 years have been the exception.

    7:35,
Assad wants the Golan heights. But without a peace treaty, Syria os still afraid to have a direct conflict with Israel. Israeli concessions will on;y be viewed as a sign of weakness.(Remember the peace after the withdrawal from Sinai, the exit from Lebanon, the handing over of the West Bank and Gaza, the surrender of Chevron, the abandonment of Gush Katif, etc?) That is the type of peace that concessions bring. So we are in a cold war with Syria, so what? No body gets killed, no shots are fired, we maintain a superior position. That better than concession in order to discuss whether a peace treaty is feasible. I’ll take the status quo.

Assad wants peace. He also wants Israeli technology and business.

Israel is in no position to fight the whole world or to wage the War of Armageddon for the Xtians.

There are 375 million Arabs in the Middle East and 5.5 million Jews. You want to take them all on? How many of us will be left when the nuclear dust settles?
