The Train of Memory, a vintage steam locomotive hauling two carriages containing pictures of child Holocaust victims, has begun touring German cities since early November. It is to reach the Auschwitz death camp in Poland on May 8.
The group argues that Bahn must face up to its historic responsibility as the transport provider to the Nazis.
Deutsche Bahn acknowledged that it was charging the group the same toll for track use as other private train operators. A spokesman said the company had to treat all customers equally.
Susanne Kill, corporate historian for Deutsche Bahn, said, "Deutsche Bahn can't allow free use of the rails in individual cases." [Deutschewelle]
I agree with Anon. 2:33AM. To be painfully cynical. The only FREE ride the Jews ever got from germany, was A ONE WAY RIDE TO AUSCHWITZ!11
Also, note the “historian’s” name is highly appropriate. it is KILL!
I guess she’s saying we gave your grandparents a free one way ticket to Auschwitz. Who asked you to come back. You come back, you pay.
Didn’t the Nazis at first charge the Jews for train tickets to be relocated (when they still thought they had to fool the world about where the jews were really headed, r”l)?
Nothing new here. Germans are very good at obeying laws and following procedures. The fact that the laws they followed killed 11 million civilians didn’t seem to bother them. So long as the letter of the law is followed.
