Israel – In an unusual move, which may develop into a new political crisis, Defense Minister Ehud Barak has refused to allow 1,000 yeshiva students to be exempted from military service.

Sixty-one new settlement recently requested to join the 50,000 haredim who have been exempted from military service as part of the arrangement which exempts men from army service as long as they study Torah on a full-time basis, the minister usually approves the addition of new yeshivas to the arrangement automatically, but this time Barak decided to refrain from doing so.

"The Defense Ministry will not longer be a rubber stamp and will not approve each and every request to shirk military duty," a security source explained. [Y- net]

When Barak was prime minister there were signs all over Israel-draft for everyone- meaning religious Jews- this is a democracy! everyone must do their part!-but Arabs are holy we must not offend them and not cause internal violence-except frum Jews which we must break their heads

Barak used this same tactic to be prime minister before-stir up anti-religious sentiment by proclaiming over and over the secular revolution-divide and conquer was used by the British-how about Boogie Yaalon former IDF chief for defense or prime minister a responsible kibbutznik who respects frum yidden

israeli arabs get plenty of money from the goverment and are completely exempt from any kind of national service civil or military from fear of offending them-what about the religious peoples sensitivities

the army should be staffed by motivated soldiers and not by girls with lipstick earrings and guns, soldiers with ponytails, seargents that change their names to gentile names, and a command that worries about their soldiers being attacked and being saved by arabs from an arab stone throwing mob; its all there just look -if you dont see ill take you there and will show you who what and where

Barak published his political message which i read in Yediot Achronot Yeashiva students and Arabs must do national service! when the Israeli Arabs objected and threatened political reprisal against Labor he withdrew his plan-but not against Yeshiva students because they dont have the political clout to threaten Labor-Hypocrite!

Built on whatever you like but they have paid for countless hours of limud hatorah in the last sixty years.

As a firm believer in the seperation of church and state I have strong doubts as to the strength of the complant that they now want to stop supporting limud hatorah.

IMHO, it is the state funding of yeshivos that drives the desire to get the bochrim into the armed services.

IOW, to many ‘secular’ yiddin in EY, getting the boys into TzaHaL is a secondary issue trailing miles behind getting them out of state funded yeshiva.

    Follow the money trail.

But, thank G-d, this all is not likely to ever be implemented, since the Medina will fall soon, and will be back under non-Jewish rule as per halacha. Back to golus the way it was supposed to be, and then Moshiach can come.

And we’ll all live happily ever after. Moshe Hirsch ym”s can be the head kapo and keep the trains running from Yerusholayim to Iran, filled with yiddin to be put to death.

FIRST is not adding new Yeshivos.

NEXT will be “investigating” existing yeshivos to make sure they “qualify.”

Then, they will “suggest” a curriculum for the Yeshivas… lighter on gemora and heavier on zionist philosophy and writings. Evolution study will be mandatory in all schools and yeshivos.

Then, it will be cancellation of the rights of all yeshivas which do not comply with the curriculum which was never really “suggested”

Then it will do away with the exemption altogether.

Or, maybe, one day, if the “medina” lasts that long, they will give exemptions for all sworn atheists.

That will move them a little closer to the “zionist dream”

New arrivals will be accepted as long as they sign a pledge of their loyalty to zionism. Being Jewish will no longer be necessary.

Then… maybe a quota on Jews moving into the country. Don’t you know that they will take jobs? and … but, you can immigrate is your entire family (over 12 years of age) enlists for 5 years.

Finally, the original zionist dream will be activated: closing yeshivos, outlawing study of Torah, tefillin will be outlawed, etc.,

But, thank G-d, this all is not likely to ever be implemented, since the Medina will fall soon, and will be back under non-Jewish rule as per halacha. Back to golus the way it was supposed to be, and then Moshiach can come.

what a behaima, Barak. Instead of focusing what he can do to protect the precious yidden inSderot, Askelon and other places, he is finding more ways to infuriate our brothers and sisters in Eretz Yisrael.

    March 6, 2008 11:20 AM

So any yid who hasn’t done everything they can to protect the precious yidden inSderot, Askelon and other places is a ‘bahaima’?

Should we count you as a gassah or a dakkah?

If all yiddin are such precious brothers and sisters to you, why aren’t YOU in uniform to protect them?

Lets look at Mr. Barak’s history and you can then fill in what you were doing “to protect the precious yidden inSderot, Askelon and other places,” during the same time line:
Ehud Brog joined the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in 1959. He served in the IDF for 35 years, rising to the position of Chief of the General Staff and the rank of Rav Aluf, the highest in the Israeli military. As a Lt. Colonel Sgan Aluf, he commanded seven tanks during the attempted crossing of the Suez Canal during the Yom Kippur War. This action was intended to relieve pressure on besieged paratroopers, but five tanks were knocked out by Sagger missiles, and the remaining two retreated.

As a commando in Sayeret Matkal, Barak led several highly acclaimed operations, such as: a) 1972 – “Operation Isotope”, the rescue mission to free the hostages onboard Sabena Flight 572 at Lod Airport b)1973 – covert mission Operation Spring of Youth in Beirut, Disguised as a woman in order to assassinate members of the Palestine Liberation Organization; c) 1976 – A key architect of the June 1976 Operation Entebbe. These operations, along with Operation Bayonet led to the dismantling of Palestinian terrorist cell Black September and a decline in international terrorism for over 20 years. It has been suspected that Barak also masterminded the Tunis Raid in which PLO leader Abu Jihad was assassinated. He was awarded the Medal of Distinguished Service and four other citations for courage and operational excellence. These five decorations make him the most decorated soldier in Israeli history. Barak is also an expert in krav maga, the official martial art of the Israeli Defense Forces.

So, please take your time and fill us in on what you have done to save the lives of your “precious yidden in Sderot, Askelon and other places,” and protect your “brothers and sisters in Eretz Yisrael”. I’m sure we I am not the only one eagerly awaiting the disclosure of your heroic escapades on behalf of klal yisroel.

My point is NOT that Ehud Barak is a tzaddik yasod olam. He obviously is not, but he has done more for more yiddin than any of us (arm-chair generals in brooklyn or grazing behaimos upstate) ever did or will ever do. So knock off the insults. He walked the walk while you and I were just talking the talk.

From what I understand TzaHaL has been raining their standards over the last few years because they have a bigger pool of candidates than they need. The average 18 year old yeshiva bochur is hardly the picture of physical fitness TzaHal needs in combat units.
The ‘need’ to draft yeshiva bochrim is real. Olmart & Co. ‘need’ to find an issue that will bring together the non-observant yiddin or else he will ‘need’ to find another job soon.

OTOH, I often wonder if we would be better off working out an alternative way for young charaidim to serve the country even part-time for the same length of time chilonim and the non-charaidi dati’im serve, with an exemption for a certain number of boys each year. It might stop the sonai torah from influencing so many other non-observent yiddin who might still have in them the spark of feeling for tradition.

What would they do with these guys in the army???
This could spell the end of TzHaL.
Can you imagine the fights just over the correct z’man for revelry?
Climb that Mountain? Sure! But do you mean aliya b’derech yeridah or yerida bederech aliya?
Open fire? Sure! But it’s shabbos. Maybe I can hold the M – 16 in myleft hand and shoot at that attacker with my right foot altz a shinoi?
Dig a Fox Hole? Sure! But can I call my Rosh Yeshiva first? You know it’s shmittah and the might be a shailo of choraish.
Clean that Latrine Sure! Do you mind if I ask my wife to have the cleaning lady to take care of it?
I don’t mind wearing a helmet but does it come in black?
I’m sorry Captain, I personally don’t mind carrying those boxes of ammo but you see I’m a cohen and it is assur for you to use a Cohen to do your own work.
Stand up straight and salute? Sure! I don’t mind for my own kavod but altz kavod hatoirah it isn’t right that a talmid chochom should stand up for an ahm ha’oretz.
Sorry, major it is Friday and I’m machmir not to work after chatzois. Besides, I was just on my way out to Geula to pick up some chocolate kokosh for shabbos.
Sergeant, I know my pushups were only half way up but we hold rubo kekullo.
    GOOD LUCK!
