A graduate of Yeshiva University’s Wurzweiler School of Social Work, Kastel worked at the Boro Park Y since September 1980, first as its program director, later as assistant director, and finally, associate director. She brings with her many years of experience and an understanding and appreciation of the needs of the community.
The Boro Park Y, established in 1917, serves the Orthodox communities of Boro Park and Flatbush with programs geared towards the needs of the community, such as Club Nissim, a social club for Holocaust survivors, and Sunday activities for children. [brooklyneagle]
The Y in BP is an overpriced, chlorine-reeking establishment, similar to Maimonides Hospital, in that it’s primary purpose is it’s own perpetuation and glorification.
Everything it does, it does to enhance its entrenched bureaucracy, and its self-important officer clique.
For the good of the community it purportedly serves, prices should be cut drastically. Minimum 50%. That way, the health benefits connected with excersise would be available to the many lower income families who cannot presently afford the exorbitant annual charges. But hey, if they did that, people would really assume that they are truly a community organization. And they have no need for that! Only for fat government programs.
Talk to the wall.
I think that Ellie started working for the Y camps before 1980. When I went to day camp in Staten Island in the 70’s, I think she was the director then.
Mazel Tov to her, she is a hard working no nonsense person, hopefully she will help the YMHA be a shining part of the community as it once was
She is the right person for the job, which she has been doing unofficially for so long anyways. She is a wonderful person, does lots of chesed and has a special “chein” to her. Mazal tov!
