New York, NY – Woody Allen asked a federal court today to strip a clothing company of at least $10 million for using his image on billboards and on the Internet.

The lawsuit said Allen, 72, was not contacted by the company and did not consent to the use of his image dressed as a Hasidic Jew with a long beard and black hat and Yiddish text meaning "the holy rebbe." The words "American Apparel" also were on the billboard.
The lawsuit seeks at least $10 million in compensatory damages and unspecified punitive damages. [contracostatimes]

Nothing about 17 years.

I don’t this he has a shot at winning. That photo was from his movie. Copyrights in this country last only 17 years. That one was made more than 17 years ago. What he may be able to get them on is that they used his image for a particular reason. I think that the ad agency can argue (with a simple street poll) that in that neighborhood no one would even recognize him as Woody Allen. Therefore, they only used the image as a stock photo – which has no protection due to its copyright has expired.

‘Heilker” with a ‘keef’ (‘koof’ to Litvaks) is the ‘official’ Poylish/Litvish way of spelling it. ‘Zintik, Montik, Dinstik’ etc etc are all spelled with a ‘keef’ -not with a Gimmel (eg as you see in Der Yid).
