According to Israeli media reports citing friends of Mr. Chen, he began studying Kabbalah Judaism at the age of 11. He left his yeshiva in Jerusalem because he considered it too “open” and began studying the writings of extremely conservative rabbis. Eventually, he became the spiritual leader of a group of ultraconservative students, who called themselves “Pitzuei HaNachal,” or “the wounded of the river.”

Mr. Chen is wanted for his alleged role in a series of ghastly abuses of his followers’ children.

Police searched Mr. Chen’s apartment on Thursday, and discovered journals documenting the violence.

Israel’s Yediot Aharonot newspaper said the raid uncovered 30 notebooks of correspondence between Mr. Chen and his followers, in which he explicitly spelled out how the children should be tortured

The notebooks explain how to bind the children in either “six ties” or “eight ties.” The notebooks describe how to prepare special drinks for the children, made of alcohol, salt, pepper and turpentine. The children were forced to drink the liquids until they vomited. “You see, they vomit the Satan inside them,” a letter tells the mother. Elior Chen’s father, Yaakov Chen, told Haaretz he did not know where his son or his son’s family was hiding. “I didn’t see him, I don’t know where he is,” he said. “The last time I saw him was three weeks ago, after he had a girl. I went to his home in Upper Betar, gave him a present and that’s it. I haven’t seen him since. I’m sitting at home and eating my heart out.”

Israel’s media have been filled with the gruesome details of the case.

It’s believed that Mr. Chen, 29, fled to Canada with at least one of his followers, identified by Israel’s Haaretz newspaper as Joseph Fisher. Mr. Fisher is not considered a suspect by Israeli police. [globeandmail]

if you say the people should know that somethings are self-explanatory you are right…. But when the abuse does get done it gets sweeped under the rug… RABBONIM should let know that you dont have to be afraid to go for HELP and not evrything should be swept!!!!!

    from ” D. Schreiber said…

Maybe true, but why don’t the rabbis, rosh yeshivas etc. issue a statement “if you see this guy go to the police and report him, it is a mitzvah to do so, and messera, Loshen hora, does not apply in this case.
    Go to the authorities.”

But I am afraid that will not happen.

    This is not Judaism.

This man is not a Rabbi and this is not any form of the Jewish religion.

This is sick and frightening. Parents who abuse their children are sick. Hashem entrusts us with a precious treasure, our children.

The whole concept of “original sin” that children are inherently evil or that they have the “devil in them” is Christian. These “notes” are similar to Puritan beliefs and practices, but are not in any way related to Judaism or Jewish tradition.

Anyone who needs a rabbi to tell him this is sick won’t believe it is sick if all the rabbis in the world told him so every minute of every day.

Not so D. Schreiber. Sadly, there are too many examples of child abuse in our communities and schools. It is only recently that some of these horrors have come to light, largely due to the desire of rabbis and others (Agudah, Yated, etc.) to overlook and cover up this cancer in our midst. Instead of this defensive coverup, the Agudah should organize seminars and publish materials on how to identify child abuse and where to report it. And yes, Rabbonim need to speak up before we learn of the next tragedy.

Would that what D. Screiber says was so clearly the case.

This monster was not practising his satanic ways on his own children; he was leading a cult. Eight people have been arrested here in Eretz Yisroel in connection with this case.

Last week another of these cult “leaders”, this one a woman from Beit Shemesh, was arrested for child abuse.

Clearly there are those who do need to be forcefully told by our leaders what is the difference between right and wrong. They would probably agree that running naked in the street is wrong but they think that force feeding children poison is not. Someone has to explain it to them.

And one more thing: the anti-religious papers are trying to make this sound like an extreme form of Judaism, and some of you posters are buying into this.

As an earlier poster mentioned before, calling his behavior ultra-conservative or ultra-religious, or anything similar, is as ironic as calling people who sacrificed their children to the Idol Molech “Extreme Ultra Orthodox Jews.”

This individual’s behavior, is not very different from that of such individuals, and sounds to me more like a Satanic cult.

The people complaining that Rabbis haven’t spoken out against this man are being ridiculous. No Rabbi has to get up and say that this person’s behavior is unacceptable and intolerable, since that is self explanatory.

The proof that it is universally understood that this behavior is unacceptable and atrocious, is that not a single person posted a comment here defending this monster’s behavior. (Usually, with other issues, there are comments supporting both sides.)

Whereas with other issues that Rabbis speak out against, it is not always self-evident why they are not okay, therefore they need to get up and talk about it.

The complaining that no one is speaking out against this behavior, is similar to complaining that no Rabbi gets up and speaks out against eating feces, or against running in the street naked. These are things that every normal human being understands are unacceptable, without being lectured.

All us Anonymous posters know how sick and evil this is but where are the Rabbonim who are usually so quick to condemn anything vile and satanic, like movies, long sheitels, concerts or pictures of women in shop windows?

“Stop being so sarcastic. It’s not as if anyone is defending this monster.”

Quite true, but then there is no widespread condemation either. Anon 9:17 AM is quite right. If this had been anything as serious as watching a movie or chalila listening to as chassidiish music concert, the Gedolei Poskei Hador would have been up in arms.

Smell the coffee and wake up everyone.

Perhaps I’m being sarcastic, but it appears this behaviour was known and tolerated for quite some time. If only people reacted the same way to abuse as they do to movies on an airplane

This goes along with an old adage. “Too” strong is always wrong. Too conservative is just as bad as too liberal.
