The youths, pleaded guilty to the charges of desecration and criminal mischief. They were sentenced by Judge Jane Cantor, of state Superior Court, Family Division, to community service, fined and placed on probation, but spared any of the considerable jail time they faced.

Elfant, a member of a committee that oversees the cemetery, is seeking damages from the four teens and their parents.

Although the Prosecutor's Office initially investigated the desecration as a bias incident, they found little to indicate that the juveniles had specifically targeted the Jewish community. Both Elfant said they were skeptical of that conclusion.

Elfant is determined to proceed with the suit, and there's nothing I can think of, that I can speculate, that would cause us to withdraw. [thnt.com]
