"We use this ugly incident … just to bring us together even more," said Tzvi Lang, chairman of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council, after the two-hour sitdown at the local community mediation center.

The assailants were wearing yarmulkes, the victim said, and are believed to be young Jews. Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes has empaneled a grand jury to probe the attack, drawing praise from Charles' family, as was reported here by VIN News.

But at least one official criticized the Hynes probe as special treatment. "There's got to be one standard for everybody. What makes this case different from all the others?" asked Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Borough Park). [nydailynews]

Lang, thanks for conviction before the trial. Go ahead, play politics with the shechunah, your alliance with the mosrim (read s{h}omrim) who handed over the names of the ALLEGED attackers to the NYPD will remain your legacy.
    Thanx for nothing

I just don’t understand. Hynes dosnt need the jewish vote? Why is Obama, Clinton, Felder, Bloomberg, McCain, Patterson, and the list goes on and on, trying to get the jewish vote? Why isnt there a popular outcry to Kelly, Bloomberg about these issues of grand jury? Where are all our askanim? We are all in one Brooklyn, why is there no pressure on Marty Markowits? He is running for something too.

Lets go guys, cook up the heat!!!

how can the yidden come forward when they’ve been tried, convicted, and sentenced, by the media, in a city where there’s clearly a double standard?

Open Letter to Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes from the Jewish Leadership Council in Crown Heights

    Friday, April 25, 2008
20 Nissan 5768, Sixth day of Passover – The Festival of Freedom

    The Honorable Charles J. Hynes,
    Kings County District Attorney
350 Jay St. Brooklyn, New York, 11201

Over the last months, members of the JLC have repeatedly met in your office, concerned that the armed muggings and bigoted harassment against the Orthodox Jewish community continue unchecked. This is in sharp contrast to the attention to justice you’ve shown to the recent allegations against an Orthodox Jew by an African American.

The past year has been a year of nightmares for our community: On July 8th, Mr. Moshe Kozlovsky was mercilessly beaten with pipes and bottles in the neighborhood. On August 22nd, Yechiel Rappaport was attacked by 4 members of the African American community resulting in the loss of 5 teeth. 16-year-old Mendel Chesney was attacked on Yom Kippur and beaten to within an inch of his life, putting him into a coma. A community blog documented 34 instances of assault by black teens on the men, women and children of Jewish Crown Heights—in one case, against a 73-year-old grandmother!

This week you announced a Grand Jury investigation into allegations against members of our community. If this is a new level of commitment towards prosecuting criminals, Jewish or black, we support your efforts 100%. If, however, your office has scurried to react because the alleged victim is the son of a police officer and the alleged assailant is an Orthodox Jew, we take issue with not having equal protection under the law.

As for the actual charge against boys in our community: The police department’s handling of the issue was outrageous if not illegal. Officers of the 71st Pct. used a fictitious hostage charge to break into the Ezagui family home at 2 AM. When 20-year-old Aaron Ezagui—not the alleged attacker—asked if the officers had a warrant, he was arrested on trumped-up OGA charges, put into solitary confinement, chained to a wall—effecting a sleep-deprivation tactic—and was denied use of a bathroom facility!

This was a detestable miscarriage of justice and a blatant abuse of the democratic legal system. If you were looking for justice, the violation of Aaron Ezagui’s civil rights and the police misconduct would be under investigation.

As members of the Orthodox Jewish community, we do not condone violence and we do not support attacks like those alleged by Mr. Andrew Charles. We do however point to the violence against Orthodox Jews in which you have thus far refused to show the same level of commitment, and we firmly appeal to you to treat our plight with the same concern for justice.

After a decade or more of calm, our community once again lives in fear. The murder of Mr. Efraim Klein in 2006, one day before he was to celebrate his son’s wedding, remains unsolved. This week’s assault during the Passover holiday in Rochester Park on a member of the Orthodox Jewish community has not resulted in any arrests though the perpetrator was immediately identified.

It has been a tough struggle to have our fear brought to the attention of the highest-ranking officers in the NYPD and city government—but it has happened, and we will do all we can to ensure we are never again painted as the unprovoked aggressors in a long history of victimhood in which we sat idly by.

We will tell our story and we will see true and unbiased justice served.

Reports out on Wednesday said that Brooklyn district attorney Charles Hynes will have a grand jury investigate the April 14th attack on a 20-year-old black male in Crown Heights. The attack was allegedly carried out by two Yidden on the corner of Carroll and Albany.

According to a report in the NY Daily News here’s what Hynes had to say about the victim of the attack: “He’s an excellent young man, and I met with him personally to assure him that I would do everything in my power to bring to justice those who humiliated him.”

It is important to point out that thus far only one side of the story is being reported in all the news media reports.

Who said that the facts are exactly as the victim alleges they were? Maybe the “victim” attacked the supposed “attackers” and the supposed “attackers” were in fact acting in self defense! So long as the alleged attackers have not been apprehended and have not had their side of the story heard the news reports are doing nothing more but inciting the public.

A grand jury investigation by the DA will only go to show that Crown Heights community is being treated to a double standard.

Mr. Hynes, when was the last time that you personally met with Jewish victims of violence in the Crown Heights community?

Mr. Hynes, where were you and the grand jury when Moshe Kozlovsky was mercilessly beaten in Crown Heights on July 8th 2007?

Mr. Hynes, where were you and the grand jury when Yechiel Rappaport was beaten and had 5 teeth knocked out near the corner of Carroll and Albany in Crown Heights on August 22nd 2007?

Mr. Hynes, where were you and the grand jury when the Davis family had a brick thrown through their skylight in their Crown Heights home on September 27th 2007?

Mr. Hynes, where were you and the grand jury when sixteen-year-old Shmuel Balkany was attacked by five black males while walking home in Crown Heights on Friday night a mere few months ago?

The above are just a few examples of some of the more serious crimes to have taken place in Crown Heights. Should you need more I’d be glad to supply them to you. But I have a question, have you met with any of the above Jewish victims Mr. Hynes?

Mr. Hynes, Jewish blood is not cheap, shame on you for playing politics with our community!

Before you start any grand jury investigation into the April 14th attack you would do good to first meet with all the Jewish victims of attacks in Crown Heights.

Let’s not start to say who’s is right or wrong. But if the person who is responsible for this attack really attacked in a case of self defence then why can’t he just step foward?! Also they say he was a member of a community patrol…. Crown height has two community patrols, one recognized by the NYPD which is Called Crown Heights Shomrim, while the other which is called Crown Heights Shmira is not recognized by the NYPD.

Al Sharpton and the likes of him is what started the Riots in Crown Heights, years ago.

The only way riots can be prevented now is with the Al Sharpton behind bars where he belongs for a very long list of crimes he has committed (it’s on his record) including and primarily for his INDICTMENT TO RIOT.

It’s against the Law to incite to Riot and Al should be behind bars before it’s too late.

    Next:
The DA, himself needs to be indicted by a Grand Jury for all of the alleged corruption he is accused of, including his corrupt “Rabbi Kolko” deal that everyone is outraged about.

The DA can only be investigated and put into place if we get the FED’s to prosecute the DA for his alleged corruption and preferential treatment and Abuse of Civil Rights – that is an alleged FEDERAL CRIME perpetrated by the DA
