The building housing the Kan Zaman Lebanese Bistro and Bar at 95 West End Ave. was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived shortly after the fire was reported at 3:21 p.m., said city Fire Marshal Kevin J. Hayes Sr.

He said the building was evacuated immediately and a second alarm was called, summoning all companies in the city, as portions of the building began to collapse.

An unidentified firefighter was taken to Monmouth Medical Center with facial burns,
and two others were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Firefighters continued to attack the blaze throughout the afternoon, and the cause was not yet determined.

“I was there when the first trucks pulled up,” said Mark Anthony of Tinton Falls, a limousine driver for Express Transportation who had just dropped off his passengers when he saw firefighters arriving at the fire.

“They (firefighters) started calling a Mayday alarm for everybody to get out of the building, because the structure just wasn’t safe,” said Anthony, who is also a volunteer firefighter for the Tinton Falls fire company. “You could see it just sagging up at the roof. You actually saw the roof cave in.”

Fire departments responding included Long Branch, Ocean Township, Fort Monmouth, Tinton Falls, Elberon, Monmouth Beach and Highlands, he said.

To both #1 and # 2 – Please re-read the story again and tell me where it says the restaurant was open at the time and where it says that the passengers from the limo were going to the restaurant. Did I miss something????

Why is it that no one can be dan lekaf zechut? Who said the restauraunt was open – maybe there were other businesses in the building? Maybe there are prepaid Shabbat meals or a simcha happening there? And maybe the limo was dropping people near there?
BUT no – we need to be holier than thou and find any possible “kateigoria”!

I’m not sure, but I think there are other establishments (non-Jewish owned) on this block. I went to the Aasbury Park Press website to look it up. It’s a poorly written article. Perhaps this limo driver was dropping off passengers to a different place, and he saw the fire.

The owner is a Lebanese Christian who has been conteplating either turning it not kosher or closing. He approached the Rabbonim that gave the hashgocha about being not kosher in the winter and Kosher in the summer. They said absolutely not. They said “if you give up the hashgocha for 1 second you have given it up forever”. Then there have been rumors he was going to close. I guess a fire may have been more profitable than simply closing the doors.

i ate there all the time he was not open on shabbos and if he wanted to he is a goy & has all the right to be open on shabbos nowhere did it say he was closed on shabbat.the reason its a loss to the lakewood chevra is bec. nowhere in lakewood were u able to sit in a resturant till 1:00 am in a “fine resturant” not a burger joint.you didnt have to worry that some nut like shneur would come & take your picture & put it in the shopper ! not to mention no where in lakewood were you able to get food with such taste & flavor ! to own a resturant is an achrayius to the tzibur theres no kuntz to just throw food on a grill & call yourself a pine resturant dont be cheap & hire a real cheff

Will all these minyan shelanu people stop with the shameless plugs for this on the grill place? And don’t worry, it will also close down before the year is up.
