Morristown, NY – Eleven Amish families are suing a northern New York community for religious discrimination.

The Amish claim the town of Morristown refuses to issue building permits that allow them to practice their religion and build homes according to their beliefs.
The federal lawsuit alleges that if the Amish cannot build their homes and farms, they will be forced to leave.
The 17-count complaint charges that since 2006, Morristown officials have singled out the Amish, who belong to the Old Order Swartzentruber Amish, for prosecution under local building codes, bringing more than ten separate prosecutions for building or moving homes without permits that require battery-powered smoke detectors, certified architectural plans and other modern innovations forbidden to the Amish.
Let this blog be filled with yidden saying how unfair it is when ANYONE is persecuted for trying to live peacefully according to their faith. That will be a kiddush Hashem big enough to combat all the anti-semitism being currently generated unfairly by the arab world, R”L
there is NO reason why these people can not be given a variance to live as they want, as long as the arrangement is safe, for themselves and their neighbors, and does not interfere with the functioning of the municipality.
Can anyone here come up with an idea of a non-electrical equivalent to a smoke detector, so that they can live in peace? How about a canary in every home???
(don’t tell P.E.T.A.) !!!
will they sue 911 if they use an elctronic defibulator to save an amish from cardiac arrest?
let them go back where they came from. a person can still belive in their beliefs even in todays world. so what is their prolem?
Let the same county prevent a mikveh or a shtibl from being built and you’d be screaming anti-semitism. The amish are good hardworking honest people. Show respect.
how can frum yidden be so disrerectful about other religions[that don’t envolve blowing up others]thi is in N.J. for goodness sake.i’m sure you tri state yidden demand your religous rights as is proper in this blessed country, all the time. beieve me MANY of our practices are odd to others.
My friends:
To say “let them go back where they came from” or to ask if they would sue 911 for using an electronic defibrillator is quite rude. They have their beliefs and traditions and are asking to lead their lives in accordance with them. Please be more considerate. After all, we (I will allow myself to assume that if you are on VIN that you are both Jewish) have been told the exact same things: to go back where we came from and to give up our old superstitions and join the 20th/21st century.
As they say, “those who live in glass houses…..”
Let’s try to help them out with ah bissele yiddishe thinking.
Maybe, if they don’t want to put in smoke detectors… for religious reasons…
We have been persecuted for generations for trying to keep our laws that seem antiquidated to the world. We find solutions for everything… and we still keep shabbos!
Maybe the KosherLamp People can come up with some sort of non-electronic smoke detector? Or anyone else on vosizneias?
IN the zechus of caring about 11 men who want to keep their own beliefs in their own houses, in peace, perhaps we can trigger rachmei shamayim on our brothers in Europe who are currently under attack? Let the ideas, and SUPPORT begin!
Let’s make a Kiddush HaShem
I support their lawsuit because it is probably a religious freedom issue. Yes, I know the Amish aren’t exactly Jew friendly. But everyone knows they have strict beliefs that they all follow. I don’t want government interfering in my Judaism; leave these guys alone.
The funny thing is last summer I read an article about Amish contractors. I think it was in the Wall Street Journal. These guys build solid homes without nails (they use solid wood pegs). It was amazing and well built. If I had the land and money , I would hire these guys (assuming they leaved nearby).
say what you want but as Jews we need to hank the people who stand up for minorities
They mamish look like chasidisha rebbes
they look like they r waiting for the boro park willwamsburg bus!!
There is an easy way to tell the differnce between a Chassid and an Amish. The Chassid is the one holding the cell phone.
#1 says “let them go back where they came from”. Are you serious? Where should they go? Pennsylvania?!
#9 says “They mamish look like chasidisha rebbes”. Not with their shaven mustaches they don’t.
He is wearing a straw hat – probably a Chofetz Chaim guy.
WE OWE THE AMISH BIG TIME.–
It is only because of a 1950’s Amish lawsuit, Yoder vs. Wisconsin, that our Yeshivos can function without Government interference.
We should return the favor now!
