Russia – Thanks to arrangements made by the Jewish community of S. Petersburg with a nearby farm, there are now kosher chickens for local Jews. The Roskar Farm agreed to have a team of 30 people come to the farm in order to prepare chickens in a manner that would be in accordance with the highest standards of Jewish law.

The shechita (ritual slaughtering) was performed by shochet Yossi Badzhiev from the Kashrut Department of the Chief Rabbinate of Russia. After the shechita was complete, each chicken was inspected by hand to assure that there were no defects or illnesses that would make it prohibited according to Jewish law. Following this, the chickens were soaked, salted and processed.

The packages of kosher poultry were marked with special seals indicating that they were kosher. The staff of the Roskar Farm also underwent training to prepare for this special project.

“For Roskar Farms, this project was more to promote good community relations that as a commercial venture. Organizing a kosher poultry line as a business is not an easy task. But there is an important human component. We are pleased to collaborate with the Jewish community and promote the development of Jewish religious life in S. Petersburg,” stated Elena Kudryavtseva, the public relations director for the Roskar Farm. “The kosher slaughtering of chicken perfectly fits into our concept of small-scale production, which is based on niche projects.”

In total, five tons of chickens were prepared, which will allow Jews of S. Petersburg to enjoy kosher meat for several months.
