Police say two officers have been added to each shift this weekend and police are doing more frequent checks on synagogues and school buildings in the central New Jersey community of 100,000 residents.

Yom Kippur, the most solemn holiday on the Jewish calendar, begins at sundown Sunday.

The increased surveillance comes after a 19-year-old student at Rabbi Jacob Joseph Yeshiva was punched in the face last Saturday. A 16-year-old boy has been charged with aggravated assault. His name has not been released because of his age.
