New York state has provided New Square with $1.6 million toward the construction of a new poultry processing that would replace the older plant, photographed on Sept. 3, 2009. (Seth Harrison/The Journal News)Rockland County, NY – A group of residents angry at the prospect of a large slaughterhouse near their neighborhood met Monday night to discuss ways to stall the facility, which they say was planned without their input and which was promised $1.6 million in state funding.

According to the Journal News, the approximately 30 residents were mostly from New Hempstead, though outside invitees from Preserve Ramapo and county Legislator Joseph Meyers were present. The site of the proposed facility is on Route 45 in New Square, separated from the homes of some of the attendees by just the width of the state road.

“We need to let our timid legislators know that we are a force to be reckoned with, that we are not going to let this slide,” said Barbara Greenwald, who hosted the meeting in her home.

“Our homes are our asset. This project is putting that asset in jeopardy,” she said.

A public hearing and an environmental review hearing are scheduled for Nov. 10.

I wish the New Square shlachthoise tremendous hatzlocho. Hopefully the preserve Ramapo terrorists will get jail time for their illegal tactics instead of just a reprimand this time.

Once again, I question the legitimacy of this funding. How can government money be used to pay for what is, essentially, private business? If that’s the case, my business could use some cash injection. I’ll be happy with $200,000.

Was the funding of this slaughterhouse restricted to this particular piece of property? Why anger the neighbors in Golus and not look for an isolated place where it is more appropriate for such an operation?
A more suited place could be found nearby for pennies on the dollar and do the work quietly and not anger the Goyim. We are not gaining anything by behaving this way, and we can profit enormously by doing it in a humanly way.

You certainly can’t blame people for not wanting to live near a slaughterhouse. If someone was going to build a slaughterhouse across the street from my house, I would do everything I could to try to stop it.

Again I ask: While it’s clear that these days, frum Jews don’t care at all about the concerns or desires of their gentile neighbors, nor for those of the non-frum, what about other frum Jews? There is a large frum community not a mile away from this slaughterhouse. Their houses stand to far precipetously in value due to this project. Does the Skverer Rebbe at least care about other furm Jews, albeit non-Skverers?

Many private businesses get gov’t funding in exchange for creating jobs.
The money is for the expansion of the existing plant, so yes, that’s the same location.

If this project was misrepresented, then the funding should be revoked.

In the past when i had heard complaints about this slaughterhouse, I had thought “you know maybe these people have a legitimate point against New Square.

Now that I heard that this “anti-slaughterhouse” campaign is being led by “Preserve Ramapo”, I know we should all support it.

For those that don’t know, “Preserve Ramampo” is a group that has dedicated their time, to fight any development in Ramapo. They are under the understanding, that Ramapo is still a rustic small village at the “foot” of the Catskills region.

This obviously not being the case, “Preserve Ramapo”, has non the less fought anything and everything that has to do with the Orthodox community.

New Square needs jobs, we need meat, and this slaughter house will not be a bother to the neighborhood. If you want to know why they are building it in a residential neighborhood, its because their building it in THEIR neighborhood. If they are having so much trouble building a slaughter house in their neighborhood, just imagine if the tried to build it in another.

Just to straighten your minds, a slaughterhouse has been there for at least 10 years and non of the neiboughrs have ever had aproblem with it even the ones living with in close radius, as matter of fact Brooklyn and Queens are filled with Muslim slaughter houses and no body ever complains. It is some self hating Jews including the host of Monday nights meeting. It does not produce any worse smell then your neighbering deli or bakery, so just put your acts togeather and behave with your fellow jews the way you think that you are treating yourself. How about all of you taking a ride to the big famous KJ Poultry processing plant and see and smell it for your self.

With regards to funding just do some research in our own undeveloped Brooklyn how mant heimishe (cahsidishe, litvishe and sefradic) companies have gotten with in the past 10. Years millions of dollars and tax abatement to start and expand their businesses again new square is no differen then any other community in getting those funds for their own projects.

Anything that can antagonize the neighbors (regardless of their religious beliefs) is WRONG WRONG WRONG! We are STILL in galus – not everyone is aware of that. They think their leader is the greatest and they have no room for MOSHIACH in their plans – and that’s why they act so selfishly. We are in galus and should therefore maintain a low profile and hopefully make a KIDDUSH HASHEM by behaving for a change. NIMBY: Not In My BackYard – if you would not want a shechthouse adjacent to your property – give the same courtesy to your fellow man. Isn’t that the way Hillel described all of the Torah in a nutshell?

It is clear that Rockland is no longer a rural area as it was 50 years ago there are many industrial especialy on major raodways as RT 59 & RT 45 where these roads connect connect to the highways, said so we need to establish more industries in the area to accomidate the growing population as well.

I have said it b4 and Ill say it again, as a resident of NH, not far from the proposed site, I am not happy about it either. This has nothing to do with antisemitism. We all ,Jew and Non-Jew alike, frum or otherwise, have a right to quality of life! Yes Monsey is no longer the ‘country’ it once was, and preserve Ramapo IS against the frum “olam” here, but this issue is NOT about that. It is about destroying neighborhoods, home value, and the quality of life’. We here in Rockland did not pay top dollar in house price and taxes, to live in an industrial zone!
I urge those in the frum community who are worried to call up 624-1300, WRCR radio station, as I did, and air YOUR feelings! They are begging for frum ppl to call and so far very few have…I do understand the slaughterhouse will help job opportunity in NSQU. but at whose expense? I am not against chassidim, in fact I think they are wonderful, kind people, but this is really not in line with ‘Viahavta Lirayacha Komocha’, as all people need to conduct their lives, is it???
Please . everyone, wake up b4 it is too late.
