Montreal, Canada – The Quebec Education Department has decided to end a 24-year arrangement by which it provides public funding through the Marie-Victorin CEGEP to allow Orthodox Jewish students to study at the junior-college level, according to a report carried Friday night by Radio-Canada.

Professors at the Torah and Vocational Institute of Montreal (TAV), in the Côte des Neiges district, have long been hired and paid through the CEGEP, as part of an agreement that dates back to 1985, the report stated.
The students as well as teachers affected by the decision are segregated by sex.
Éli Meroz, TAV’s academic director, could not be reached directly for comment or an elaboration. But he was quoted by Radio-Canada as being very surprised: “The courses we offer do not have religious content,” Meroz said, citing computer courses as an example.
According to the report, officials from the department will begin discussions with the school, and a transition plan is to be put into place covering students who are currently enrolled, so that they can finish their courses.
The report added that the TAV is one of a total of three such schools, with a total of about 800 Orthodox students, affected by the funding cut-off.
I hope they will change their policy. Tav is a great school for heimishe yungerleit and women who can study and learn a proffesional career.
its about time .maybe if they went for a degree in school they would not be so concerened! i hope other districs do the same including the USA
I am afraid Beth Jacob and Beth Chaya Mushka are the other two. This will mean yet higher tuition again, folks. Not funny at all.
it happened because tav was greedy – they would register students that don’t attend just for the funding. there’s no way tav has 800 students.
it’s a shame, tav serves a good purpose in montreal
this is also abt beis chaya mushka seminary and with montrealers ending school a yr earlier than the rest of the world, we are hardly accepted out of town cuz were too young…help.
The fact is that there were some religious people who thought that they know everyone and everything about government connections and thought they were smarter than everyone else. they tried to do something also and therefore opened the eyes of the government that maybe all the religious are running that way and therefore 3 very good programs for the frum men and ladies are being closed.
Just to give you soem facts straight. Cegep Mrie Victorien was supporint 3 Jewish institutions thus providing hundres of girls and ladies the oppurtunity to learn in a proper environment. As a student in one of these schools, I can tell you the the admin is very ontop of the attendeces and no unattending people are registered. This whole thing is not a result of any sort of fraud.
