Mogadishu, Somalia – Man Arrested At Airport With Chemicals, Syringe

    10

Mogadishu, Somalia – Officials say a Somali national tried to board a commercial airliner in Mogadishu last month with powdered chemicals, liquid and a syringe that together could have caused an explosion. The hallmarks bear chilling similarities to the terrorist plot to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner.

Police spokesman Abdulahi Hassan Barise says the suspect was arrested before the Nov. 13 Daallo Airlines flight departed. It was scheduled to travel from Mogadishu to the northern Somali city of Hargeisa, then to Djibouti and Dubai.

Two international officials in Nairobi said Wednesday the incident is similar to the Detroit attack in that the Somali man had a syringe, a bag of powdered chemicals and liquid. U.S. officials are aware of the incident and hastening to investigate any possible links with the Detroit attack.

Its good to see someone get caught before getting on the plane. El Al does it right – everyone gets profiled, no exceptions. You do what you have to do.

I am a jewish religious man, but whenever i take elal i get grilled 3 or 4 times as if i am a criminal.

Simple, pointed questions like “Who is your rabbi?” “what shul do you daven in”? do the trick.

I was at el al and security wanted to test whether personnel was paying attention. So they asked my friend to switch passports with me to see if the person would notice. They did NOT notice, and then got in big trouble for it.

There is no fooling el al. Top notch security with low tech techniques does the trick.

    US should hire elal security.

El Al is a tiny airline dealing with a very small and select flying public. It is very easy to ask a religious Jew what shul he goes to. What are you going to do when you are dealing with the rest of the world and dealing with thousands of different types of people.

El Al has grilled me (a 44 year old man with gray hair) even when I’ve traveled to Eretz Yisroel with my wife and 4 kids (ages 21 months to 8 years)! I don’t care what El Al does, however. I will submit to any length of questioning, any kind of searches if I can be assured that these are being done to give me the best possible chance that terrorists will be weeded out. I think the vast majority of Americans would too.
