Mayer says that about three years ago the well supplying water to his home in Candor became polluted with natural gas.

Explosive vapors now run from his tap along with the water.

The Vietnam veteran demonstrates by holding a lighter to the running water and igniting it with a flash.

Mayer jokes that he can wash his dishes and poach an egg at the same time.

But it’s no joke. Experts say the house could explode if the faucet emits enough gas.

State environmental officials say the gas was created and released by nature, but Mayer suspects that drilling by an energy company is to blame.

The natural-gas company Fortuna Energy denies any link to the problem.

Good luck with getting someone to take responsibility. An oil company, after wiping an entire town of the map in Indonesia, hired a firm to prove that sudden appearance of the mud volcano which inundated the region was entirely owing to totally natural causes. (The mysterious coincidence of the eruption occurring precisely at the same time as a well was drilled without proper safety procedures, was conclusively proven to have been caused by a 92 year old Gypsy fortune teller in the Balkans shaking her magic eight ball at the time).

Unless Mr. Mayer has a Gajillion dollars to sue the oil company through every level of appellate court, and hire numerous specialized firms to disprove the myriad fabricated expert assessments spun out by the myriad fabricated consulting firms spun out by the oil firm, he can keep on poaching his eggs while doing the dishes. Or perhaps maybe one of his local elected official will investig4wtvercer v5tgfthye5srhasdaftb 4et4y – Sorry about that. Fell off my chair laughing.

    Mr. Mayer, welcome to America.

First off I want to say it unfortunate that this guys well water in gas in it, but to blame gas drilling that is a real stretch.
I looked up where this guy lives and then the gas wells he refers to that were drilled in Spencer. The distance between his house and that well is 13.25 miles (to the well that is just south of the village of Spencer). There is no way you can convince me that this drilling is effecting his well.
Secondly the video and short article imply that it is Marcellus well drilling that is to blame. Problem with this is that three years ago there was no Marcellus drilling happening in NYS. That well was for gas in the Trenton-Black River formation (much deeper).
Lastly it is a joke that this is reported and summarized as a spill on the DEC website. There has been a bunch a press lately taking about all the spills that are reported related to gas drilling activities, if this is an example of a spill then all the other data is suspect!
I don’t know what caused this problem (maybe change in water table, are there more water wells in the area??), but to assume it’s the fault of a gas well that is miles and miles away, is not reasonable.
