This intriguing question has been asked by a variety of scholars, theologians, anthropologists and pundits over the years, but has remained somewhere between the realms of amateur speculation and serious academic research.

But now, for the first time, the Israeli government has shown official interest, with their Foreign Ministry providing a scholarship to an Indian scientist to come to the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa and determine whether or not the tribe that provides the hard core of today’s Taliban has a blood link to any of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel, and specifically to the tribe of Efraim.

Shahnaz Ali, a senior research fellow at the National Institute of Immunohaematology, Mumbai, has joined the Technion to study the blood samples that she collected from Afridi Pathans in Malihabad, in the Lucknow district, Uttar Pradesh state, India, to check their putative Israelite origin.

Nice speculations. It should be noted that Pathan y-dna (markers passed from father to son) are nowhere close to the CMH (markers common to most Kohanim) or to those of any major Jewish population in the world.

Conclusion: they are not descendants of Israelites.

Oh yes, let’s blame the Jews for the world’s terrorism now! All we have to do is declare that all terrorists are descendants from the lost tribes!

There is a lot of evidence that they are indeed from the lost tribes, and it should not be. Ignored, there was a famouse historian traveler (forgot his name) who studied this subject, they have some customs very similer to jewish customs

I doubt that they descend from Jews, but we have surely abopted some Taliban-like standards in our community lately.

The Taliban (Pashto: طالبان ṭālibān, meaning “students”), also Taleban, is a radical Sunni Islamist movement that governed Afghanistan from 1996 until late 2001, when they were removed from power by NATO forces during Operation Enduring Freedom. It has regrouped since 2004 and revived as a strong insurgency movement governing at the local level and fighting a guerrilla war against the governments of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).[4] The movement is made up of members belonging to different ethnic Pashtun tribes,[5] along with a number of volunteers from nearby Islamic countries such as Uzbeks, Tajiks, Chechens, Arabs, Punjabis and others.[6][7][8] They operate in Afghanistan and Pakistan, mostly around the Durand Line regions. U.S. officials say their headquarters is in or around Quetta, although Pakistan denies it.[9][10]
The Taliban movement is headed by Mullah Mohammed Omar,[11] who is still in hiding. Mullah Omar’s original commanders were “a mixture of former small-unit military commanders and madrasah teachers,”[12] and the rank-and-file made up mostly of Afghan refugees who had studied at Islamic religious schools in

I’ve heard this before from various internet gossip forums. It seems little more than fantasy – amateur speculation can claim Jewish origin for just about any modern ethic group. The bottom line IS – they are not Jews now, if they ever were.

in Maseches Sanhedrin in Perek Chelek (I think 110b) the Gemarah says “Aseres Hashvatim Ein Asidin Lachzor” and Rashi says by “Eretz Acheres” that they went to “Medinas Afriki”
and the Gemarah says that they will mingle with goyim (intermarry) and by now there are probably no remnants of a pure Jew over there

Put a black hat on some and see for yourself…how Jewish some look!
In golus, there were always some Yidden who converted, were forced to or given to goyim as keepsake for return when things calmed down. If the parents died and there was no family left, lo aleinu this family was lost altogether.Of recent we know of such stories from the holocaust.

Clarification: Genetic research can (according to some) show descend from Israelite/Jewish paternal line, it can NOT determine the halachic status of an individual. I.e. on can have “jewish” genes and be a goy gamur and one can have genes not shared by any other Jews and be 100% Jewish. No connection.

This Pathan DNA reseach is just for interest and has no halachic ramifications whatsoever.

Anything is possible with thousands of years of Galut. I seem to recall reading that the Chinese Jews of Kaifeng originally migrated from Afghanistan after being persecuted locally. The Silk Road connecting China with Persia had Jews all over the place, inluding Bukhara, Afghanistan, Balkans, etc… There are even those who have proven links to many within the Palestinian community to having Jewish origins, having been forcibly converted over the ages. Ther was also a story of many of the original Clans in Saudi Arabia being descendents of Jews forcibly converted when they rejected Islam… Who can say. Did we not just find an entire Tribe of Manashe near Kashmir? Anyone who disputes that which they do not know is silly. The Geula will probably shock us all. There are Mekubalim who have found links among Native Americans to Jewish Tribes…. Keep an open mind, you never know wheere are precious Yidden are hidden.
