Last month 17 Friendship Circle organizations won $20,000 each in the Chase Community Giving contest. A year ago, JCorps won $300,000 in a Community Heroes contest sponsored by the UJA.

Now, in the latest spectacle, Kohl’s Dept. stores is offering half a million dollars to each of the 20 schools that gets the most votes on Facebook between now and September third.
Not surprisingly, the leader board is dominated by Yeshivas throughout the country. Schools in Los Angeles, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Margate Florida are in the top 20. Many many more are in the top hundred. The race is on and at this point it is still anybody’s game.

With more than half way through the competition, the leadership board has just been published by Kohl’s and as of Monday August 2nd, the school in first place, leading all the schools in America is a Chabad Yeshiva Day School in Long Island, Great Neck – the Silverstein Hebrew Academy located at 117 Cuttermill Rd.

Rabbi Dovid Ezagui, director of the Silverstein Hebrew Academy, thanks all people in the community for placing them in the top spot, with over 9,000 votes as of 9:00 pm Monday.

“What a Koach we have when we stand united for our own Jewish school.” Rabbi Ezagui said

Other schools in the lead is Bnos Chomesh Academy, a small girls’ high school in Brooklyn, is one school taking the race quite seriously. “We don’t have a large network of alumni since we are only in existence since 2007. We are working many different strategies. We are finding that a personal approach works best, so we’re making lots of phone calls,” says Mrs. Dena Gorkin the school’s principal. “We are offering entry into a raffle for a new laptop if people vote for us.

“We have so many dreams for this money,” explains Nechama Chanin, BCA’s administrator. “Our school serves girls who were not successful in larger school settings. With warmth and a really personalized approach we have seen great success with our students.”

Bnos Chomesh currently rents its premises but is looking to purchase a building. $500,000 would certainly go a long way toward this endeavor.

I dont have facebook (bshita) so I am not voting. If you do have it already, you may as well vote for some of the top voted-for schools to help them out. They cannot all win, and voting for the bottom schools helps no one.

Please Vote for the Yeshiva Academy in Worcester, MA aka Yeshiva Achei Temim. It is the only Jewish day school in all of central Massachusetts. It is a historic institution which recently had its 65th anniversary. They need the money desperately to pay off debt as well as their teachers. This money would be such a blessing to this community.

I like Hebrew Academy Community School, Margate FL. This school goes inte heavy debt to ensure that no jewish kid is turned away for lack of ability to pay.

Please vote for Silverstein Hebrew Academy in Great Neck NY. It is a great school that seeks to educate children al pi kedushas Hatorah, which many would otherwise be in the Great Neck Public Schools. When you vote for S.H.A., you are entered into a weekly raffle for an IPAD. The raffle is going on weekly for the next six weeks. Your votes are needed!!! If you have a facebook account, please go to votesha.com. (If you don’t, I certainly understand the dangers to kedush that Facebook present. But if you do have an account, you may as well help a yiddishe school!)

Torah Academy of Brookline,MA hasn’t really promoted this. No ipads to give away. No fancy website. Just a cheder trying to educate 200 yiddishe neshomos. If you have 5 votes to spare, why not send them. Winning this money would be of immeasurable help.
