Israel – Jerusalem Police on Sunday raided the offices of three ultra-Orthodox non-profit organizations, which operate yeshivas in the capital and nearby towns of Beit Shemesh and Beitar Illit. Officers believe that the organizations embezzled millions from the State.

The haredi institutions are suspected to have produced fake IDs in order to receive monthly stipends from the Education Ministry for alleged yeshiva students.
Six suspects were arrested and four others were brought in for questioning. More than a 1,000 fake ID cards were discovered in the raid, along with computers and machines for printing and laminating the cards, and other equipment.
A preliminary hearing for a number of men detained during the raid has been scheduled for Monday.
Police officials said they monitored the organizations in question for quite some time. “The organizations presented a false record of hundreds of students who attend each yeshiva, and received money for these students,” one official explained. “In reality, only a few dozen students attended.”
Police are also investigating the location laundering the embezzled money, and expect to make more arrests in the case.

So not only are they taking money from the Government so real “fake” learners can sit, they are now taking money so fake “fake” learners can sit. Do they actually UNDERSTAND the words that they sit and “learn” from morning until evening? This is just plain SAD!

The Arutz7 site says one of the “Torah” institutions is the Slonim Kollel in Bet Shemesh. I wonder if they’re related to the heilega Slonim of Emmanuel?

I am not saying that if what is claimed happened is right.
But to all of the angry and hateful commentors I say this: Where you so angry when Madoff was arrested and caused a greater chilulk Hashem?
What about Rothstein (I think that’s his name) in Florida when he got arrested?
If you truly care about chilul Hashem and not that you don’t have the chance to sit and learn all day, you would be just as upset at Madoff and his JEWISH cohorts who sat on the board of prominent schools and shuls in NYC.

There are over 52 places in the Talmud that tells us to work. The Shulchan Aruch tells us to work. I am fed up of self-interst seeking Rabbis who preach that work is forbidden. They have created their own religion. The religion of greed. Not only is this problem rampent in Israel but it is rampent in the U.S.A. as well. How can our youth trust such frauds? No wonder we have the problems we have. I want the yeshivos to open their books and let the public know how they handle their finances. The Talmud in Barachas says that if one doesn’t have a job in the end that person will come to steal. We are raising awhole generation of people who will be faced with this delema. Get a Job now!
To #12 . I was very upset at Madoff and Rothstein but are you equating them with Shomrei Torah Jews? Shouldn’t a frum Jew be more sensitive to a Chilul Hashem than a Jew who keeps very little? We know from the Gemora that Hashem judge’s a person according to his level. Moishe Rebbenu was judged more harshly than a person of a lesser stature would have been. Shouldn’t we expect more from the people who teach our kids and who run the yeshivos? You bet we should. That’s why when I see a frum person arrested for a crime it does bother me more. It should bother you more too.

Excuse me there were suppose 3 kollels doing this; and how many people were involved? So how do you blame everybody for the works of 3, 4, 6 people. Madoff

its about time all the mosdos open their books and let the oilem really know where their money is going. we have yeshivas and kollelim that have no money and are on the verge of closing down while we have others that are huge money making money pits. In fact one of them has assets of close to $100 million but still makes massive money making campaigns. you would think they are about to close. oilem goilem

why do people insist on called them frum they are no different than one who is treif and does not keep shabas.

How many stories coming out of Israel with lurid details of police raids & aggressive prosecutions turn out to be less than originally reported? Is everyone so sure it’s all true? I would suggest we not trust the police & the taxing bodies in Israel so reflexively.
