A police vehicle that Kelly was a passenger in, rear ended another vehicle in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn around 8 p.m.

While traveling east bound on the two-lane Gowanus entrance to the Belt Parkway near the 65th Street exit, a white Ford Econoline van was cut off by a red sedan as the two lanes narrowed to one. The red sedan was not struck and continued without stopping.

The driver of the van braked hard to avoid hitting the red sedan, causing the van to fishtail, striking a snow embankment and a Jersey barrier, and wedge at a perpendicular angle to the roadway.

The NYPD vehicle, a 2008 Ford Expedition, braked and slid into the van.

The NYPD vehicle was then struck in the rear driver side panel by a Lincoln Town car occupied by the driver and livery passenger.

NYPD and FDNY responded to the scene.

None of the people inside any of the vehicles were injured.

The vehicles were traveling at approximately 40 mph when the accident occurred.

No airbags deployed on any of the vehicles.

The Town Car had minor damage and was driven away by the operator.

The van wouldn’t start and was towed.

The NYPD vehicle was driven from scene.

How long would a civilian have waited for the police and FDNY to show up? Everyone is created equal?

In that area? It is a miracle there aren’t 10 accidents every day on that spot. The left lane ends abrubtly with no warning. If you don’t merge to the right before going onto the Belt Perkway you will be hitting the wall.

This small area has been under construction for years, only changing lane patterns without any warnings.

This accident was bound to happen and I expect we will hear of more like it or worse. Glad it happened to Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. Maybe this will draw attention to the situation there.
