London – NBC Sports Anchor To Observe Silence For 1972 Munich Attack

Bob Costas, Host -- NBC Photo: Mitch HaasethLondon – Famous sportcaster Bob Costas who is NBC’s host for its television coverage of the olympics said he will hold a moment of silence on the air while covering the opening ceremonies to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 1972 Munich olympics massacre of Israeli athletes, a number of media sources reported on Sunday that he told the Hollywood Reporter.

Costas’ moment of silence contrasts starkly with the decision of the International Olympic Committee, also announced Sunday, not to have any public commemoration during the opening ceremonies.

The IOC said such a public display regarding tragic events was inappropriate for opening ceremonies and would be addressed in private with the current Israeli athletes.

According to media sources, Costas told the Hollywood Reporter that, “I intend to note that the IOC denied the request. Many people find that denial more than puzzling, but insensitive. Here’s a minute of silence right now.”
