Moshe Guttman, the 24-year-old married father of a newborn, was struck and seriously injured by a 1993 Chevy Astro Van this past Saturday night shortly after changing a tire for a stranded motorist. Guttman sustained a fractured skull and severe hip injury in the crash. He is now listed in stable condition following several surgeries.

Police have identified 34-year-old Silvestre Hernandez-Rugerio as the man responsible for the hit-and-run collision.

Pieces of the 1993 Chevy Astro Van were left at the crash scene, leading police to search for an Astro with front-end damage, a missing front bumper guard, and the center of the black plastic grill with the Chevy insignia.

Hernandez-Rugerio was caught after a relative of Guttman’s spotted the van parked in the back of an East 5th Street home and contacted police. When officers arrived, they found the damage to the parked van to be consistent with the debris found at the crime scene.

A $5,000 reward had been offered by the local Policemen’s Benevolent Association and Chaveirim for information leading to the suspect.

Charges against Hernandez-Rugerio are pending as of this reporting. We will bring you more details as they become available.

Please say tehillim for Moshe Aron ben Miriam Zissel.

If anyone is wondering… this criminal who didn’t wait to find out whether the person he hit survived or not is in this country illegally. …and yes the van did have PA plates (on the rear).

Can someone explain to me how every illegal alien in NY/NJ can obtain PA plates?

Prediction: Commenters here will scream for the perpetrators head.
If it were reversed, if an Orthodox Jew had hit a Latino Christian, they would be screaming even louder for all charges to be dropped.

Not being familiar with the case, I can not comment on “the facts”, but I can say that any piece of garbage that causes a hit & run deserves to be sent to an abandoned island! Now this young father who was doing a mitzvah has had his and his family’s life changed forever…justice needs to be sought for that.

Well, at least we can agree that we wish a speedy and complete recovery to the man who was injured.
