Senate Republican leader Dean Skelos says his conference is looking to change the law’s limit of seven bullets in magazines that commonly hold 10. He says one change might be to lift the limit inside a gun owner’s home.

Skelos says Republicans are also looking at other provisions sought by legal gun owners concerned about protecting their homes and families.

Skelos’ comments Monday come a week after some Republicans told The Associated Press they want to change the law, which drew two of the largest protest rallies Albany has seen in recent years.

The Senate has an opportunity to force some revisions because the bill requires several fixes.

The basic problem with the seven round magazine limit is that no one makes such magazines for otherwise permissible firearms rendering them effectively (or at least legally) inoperative. I do not see how a seven round limit is functionally more effective than the previous 10 round limit for which magazines are readily available. Frankly, I don’t understand the hysteria over “assault rifles” with “high capacity” magazines in general. The FBI’s consolidated crime report indicates that more people are murdered every year with baseball bats and other blunt objects than with rifles of any kind, let alone “assault rifles”. Even Ray Kelly, the NYC Police Commissioner and certainly no flak for the NRA, testified before Congress that military style rifles accounted for less than two percent of illegal weapons seized in criminal investigations in NYC.

Certainly more needs to be done in terms of keeping firearms out of the hands of mentally unstable people and other proscribed individuals but ignorant witch hunts aren’t likely to do anything but turn good, law-abiding citizens into instant criminals.

As a boro park resident who has a vast collection of guns, I am tired of these liberal loons obssesed against normal citizens having legal weapons. More people are murdered in abortions on demand than gun shootings. It was the nazis and communist who outlawed guns. In fact right here near boro park we have a heimisha gun club and next door there was a frum yid who owned a gun shop. He was very helpful when I bought my first handguns from his store. A real mentsch.
