DNAinfo New York (http://dnain.fo/1ePcVuE) reports that the NYPD’s Intelligence Division, with Kelly’s involvement, is recommending that Kelly use a 10-officer detail of bodyguards funded by taxpayers. The commissioner initially requested a six-officer detail last month.

The group will protect Kelly and his family 24/7 in New York City and at times, possibly out of town, when his 12-year run as commissioner ends next month. Kelly’s replacement and City Hall will need to approve the detail.

The NYPD will reevaluate Kelly’s security needs in six months.

    What a chutzpah.

Every police officer knows they take a risk when they become a police officer.

Ray Kelly is at no greater than risk than all of the federal judges and prosecutors handling criminals cases.

In fact, he’s at less of a risk. He legally carries a firearm.

What a waste of taxpayer money. There should be an independent review of the risk by an independent agency – not within the nypd.

Insanity! Even pentagon chief of staffs don’t get such protection when they retire. General Petaeus walks around NYC alone and gets heckled by CUNY students without 10 body guards and he knows more state secrets from his CIA days and has more enemies than some police commissionaire. If the city will allow this nonsense, every other retiring commissionaire will inflate his need for protection. Let me guess, Kelly will cite threat from “terrorists.”

I can understand why this is necessary. I don’t know about a 10-officer detail of bodyguards, but definitely can understand why he needs security.
