Ari Fuld was accompanied to his final resting place by thousands of stunned mourners just hours after chasing down and shooting the teenager who mortally stabbed him in order to prevent his attacker from harming others.
Fuld’s funeral began shortly before midnight with high ranking Israeli officials including Chief Rabbi Dovid Lau, American Ambassador David Friedman and Minister of Agriculture Uri Uriel among those who came to pay their respects to the Efrat resident.
Heartrending wails and sobs ripped through the night as multiple family members eulogized Fuld, with speaker after speaker recalling the father of four as the consummate hero.
Fuld’s father, Rabbi Yonah Fuld said that as the grandson of a Holocaust survivor, his son truly understood the importance of a Jewish homeland, a cause he wholeheartedly embraced.
“He was a paratrooper and he fought in the second war against Lebanon,” said Rabbi Fuld. “He would continue serving whenever he was called up for reserve duty. My wife would ask him when he was going to stop and he said that would continue serving his country until he had breathed his last breath.”
Rabbi Fuld said that his son both lived and died as a hero.
“Every bone in his body was sanctified for Israel,” said Rabbi Fuld. “Tzion is crying. The State of Israel is crying and those tears have reached the entire world.”
Fuld also spoke of his son’s passion for Torah, noting that when he wasn’t busy advocating for his country, he could be found with a sefer in his hands.
“Even in his youth, he would be up until 2 AM reviewing shiurim with other students and would constantly be engaged in learning,” said Rabbi Fuld. “He was truly mighty, like a lion.”
Fuld’s brothers Moshe, Dani, Eitan and Hillel all spoke at the funeral, praising him for his bravery, his passion and his unwavering commitment to his children, teaching them the importance of prayer, Torah and truth.
“My brother lived as a hero and he died as a hero,” said Hillel Fuld. “He was a hero until his very last moment.”
Both Tamar and Yakir Fuld spoke about their father’s bravery. Tamar Fuld said that at first she didn’t believe that the murder victim could have been her father, because the terrorist was only neutralized and not killed.
“My father was a fighter and that was how he died,” said Yakir Fuld.
A tearful Miriam Fuld shared that she and her husband had been born less than 24 hours apart and that she never dreamed that their lives could be shattered in such a terrible way.
Wondering aloud how she would ever be able to go on, Miriam Fuld addressed her husband directly saying, “I promise you I will watch over our children. It will be your job to watch over us from above. Thank you for the wonderful years and the incredible children you gave me. I love you, love you, love you.”
