JERUSALEM (VINnews) — Only 53% of secular Israelis are amenable to living near Chareidim, according to a survey by the “Living Together” association published by Yisrael Hayom. However when asked whether they were willing to live near Arabs, 69% answered positively and 62% were willing to live near Bedouin.

The troubling survey also revealed that 77% of secular Israelis are willing to maintain a relationship with Chareidim, but 79% would maintain such a relationship with Bedouin and 82% with Arabs.

The results of the survey demonstrate that secular Israelis have a negative attitude towards Chareidim and also towards other minorities. However the other  minorities do not maintain a similar negative attitude towards secular Israelis.

Ironically, liberals who like to consider themselves as people who live and let live are actually only liberal towards communities they feel comfortable with. Thus, they are liberal towards Arabs but not towards Chareidim, whereas conservatives are more liberal towards both groups.

The survey queried whether the coronavirus had exacerbated the polarization between the groups. 74% of Chareidim responded that there had been a deterioration. People feel it whereever they go. Dr. Gali Sambira, who directed the survey said that “if I cough on a bus I feel like a hired killer but a Chareidi who gets on a bus feels like an enemy of the people.”

During the entire period of the virus the media highlighted Chareidi violations of health regulations while ignoring secular infringements. The recent period in which the Chareidi population had the lowest levels of infection was also ignored by the media. This, according to the survey’s directors was the major factor which caused a half of secular Israelis to say that they were not willing to live near Chareidim.

There are Arabs that don’t do violence.
From` their point of view, living next to an Israeli Arab will usually be no issue. You have to be blind not to realize Chareidim as neighbors has issues. The demonstrations which have trapped uninvolved people in buses and cars for hours while some frustrated teens burn garbage cans and buses, remember? Does anybody not understand that families with more kids and less money create more garbage outdoors? Has anybody not seen frum teens littering candy wrappers near KRM? I have seen it.

It is not helpful to Charedi cause when Peleg blocs the entrance to the Yerushalyim for hours because their folks refuse to sign the draft waiver and get themselves arrested. Charedim are viewed as selfish. I know all about Hatzalah, MADA, ZAKA, Bikur Cholim etc but if you think about it carefully it is a fraction of the overall Charedi population that serves in that manner. The Chilonim are resentful and there is some reasonable base for that resentment. PErsonally, I live in Dati Leumi neighborhood and even though I am the only Bekeshe in town, I couldn’t be happier.

Why surprised? The Arabs will not try to force their lifestile on the whole neighborhood while the Haredim have shown that they will try just that. Live and let live, is not the Haredi way of life.

Zionist PM Rabin’s daughter? famously stated that she would prefer her kids marry an Arab than a Chareidi.

secular Israelis read the anti religious secular press so they hate charadim even though they have never met any. Sad, but true.
