NEW YORK (JTA) — Rep. Lee Zeldin, one of two Jewish Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives, is considering a run for New York governor in light of scandals engulfing incumbent Andrew Cuomo.

“After a lot of people reached out to me in recent days and weeks, and after discussing it at length with my wife and daughters, I am now actively exploring a run for governor of New York against Andrew Cuomo in 2022,” Zeldin told Newsday on Tuesday.

The newspaper quoted a number of Republican state officials as welcoming the news, noting that Zeldin won his Long Island district handily in the last election and is adept at obtaining federal funding for the state.

Statewide, however, Zeldin could face some obstacles: He has been one of former president Donald Trump’s most vocal boosters in a state where Trump is reviled. Zeldin was among the dozens of Republicans who voted to overturn Joe Biden’s presidential win.

Moreover, it’s not at all certain Cuomo would run for a fourth term in 2022, given how wounded he is because of the recent spate of allegations that he covered up the number of dead from the coronavirus, bullied and threatened opponents, and sexually harassed at least two subordinates.

There is speculation that Cuomo may resign. In that case, the Democratic lieutenant governor, Kathy Hochul, would take his job.

It’s way past time to move the discussion away from Trump. He accomplished much good, and created some problems, and he’s out of the office.

Lee is a good man. Well liked in his district and the surrounding areas. He’s a middle-of-the-road family man, unlikely to produce any of the sexual shenanigans that we’ve seen over the past few years. Cuomo seems dead set on staying in the executive mansion until the next election. That could be exactly what NY Republicans need.

Rep. Tom Reed should be the Republican Gubernatorial Candidate. A true conservative, civil and principled not the standard riff-raff of today’s GOP.

I don’t like when Jews are in high-profile and would never vote for a Jew running in those positions as it causes much antiSemitism, positions but in this case I’m making an exception. A Republican governor would inject a healthy dose of normalcy into this state run by clowns.

it’s a shame – we could use a republican governor – but his recent support of the elections craziness means he would never attract the moderate democrats he would need to win.

Well, he supported trump by taking away SALT Tax deductions from New Yorkers. It cost us Middle Income New Yorkers avg. 5-10.000 a year, the main reason Trump lost NY State 36 to 62 to Biden. He even lost Brooklyn where most of the frumme lives. Good Luck. He would do much better in North Dakota. The progressive liberals are winning every single statewide election since Trump was elected. Just a few years ago the NYS Senate was Republican controlled. Since Trump the Dems have a veto proof Supermajority. Lets see if he will denounce Trump in order to have even a small chance.

He has my vote. He backed Trump’s lies about the ‘rigged election’, supports right wing dictators, loves Tsar Pootin, supports racist policies vs immigrants and voted 5x trying to kill Healthcare! He also supports kids being kept in cages, a nice touch…
