JERUSALEM (VINnews) — Moroccan Prime Minister Saadeddine Othmani congratulated Hamas on its “victory” over Israel. Othmani wrote to Hamas’ political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, on Saturday to congratulate him on “the victory achieved by the Palestinian people and their resistance,” the Moroccan news outlet Al Maghrib Today reported. Moroccan King Mohammed VI also sent emergency aid to Gaza.

These steps seem to contradict Morocco’s peace treaty with Israel, signed in December 2020.The two states agreed to establish full diplomatic relations as part of a US-brokered agreement. Israel’s ambassador to Morroco Dr. David Govrin issued a sharp condemnation of the Moroccan statements towards Hamas, angering many Moroccans who do not accept Othmani’s steps but were irked by the interference of the ambassador in local political affairs.

Even though Morocco officially recognized Israel, public sentiment in the country is overwhelmingly pro-Palestinian and policy towards Israel remains a wedge issue.
