In Apparent Flip-Flop, Eric Adams Supports Bill Giving Non-Citizens Right to Vote

NEW YORK CITY (VINnews) — Eric Adams announced his support for a bill that will allow non-citizens to vote. The NYC Mayor’s endorsement will allow the bill, which passed the City Council last month, to automatically become law.

In a statement released this weekend Adams said, “I believe that New Yorkers should have a say in their government, which is why I have and will continue to support this important legislation. While I initially had some concerns about one aspect of the bill, I had a productive dialogue with my colleagues in government that put those concerns at ease. I believe allowing the legislation to be enacted is by far the best choice, and look forward to bringing millions more into the democratic process.”

Adams did not say what his concerns were, or which aspect of the bill they involved.

The Council passed the controversial “Our City, Our Vote” legislation in December, despite widespread concerns that it is illegal–including from Bill de Blasio and some constitutional experts.

The bill granted approximately 800,000 legal non-citizens the right to vote in local elections.

The announcement by Adams has gotten intense backlash, including from City Councilman Kalman Yeger, and Staten Island Republican Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis.

Last month, the New York State Republican Party threatened to file a lawsuit to take down the bill.

The decision by Adams appears to be a flip-flop. At a recent press conference, he was asked about the legislation, and said that he found it “concerning” for a person who lives in the US “for only 30 days to have determination over the mayor, comptroller and public advocate.”

Sbsolute insanity!! And yet again, this is what you get from a Democrat and the Democrat party. What else would you expect? They won’t stop until this whole country, it’s constitution, it’s laws, our life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness is totally gone.

I question if this will stand up in the courts. Perhaps it will. I do not like it, but I get the justification for allowing non citizens vote in local elections. Image someone living here for some time, paying taxes, working on getting citizenship. Maybe they should have a say (vote) on local elections. Honestly, the right to vote was originally expanded to tax payers after it was originally just white landowners. If they pay for the government, perhaps it’s fair for them to have a say in how the money is spent. Thirty days seems very short in my opinion.

What is the big tsimmis of non-citizens voting in local municipal elections, which affect their lives the most? They are not voting in state elections, or federal elections. What is the problem?
