Badatz Calls For A Boycott Of Doritos Snack ‘Until After Pesach’

JERUSALEM (VINnews) — After the Strauss company featured a controversial ad for its Doritos snack which included LGBTQ families, many public figures, including Jerusalem deputy mayor Aryeh King and the editor of the Besheva newspaper, called for a boycott on the snack. Many people were puzzled why the Badatz of the Eda Chareidis continued to grant its hechsher to the product.

The Badatz has now issued a letter in which it calls on people to boycott the Doritos snack until after Pesach, according to a report by the Yisrael Hayom newspaper. The letter says that “with great sorrow we heard that the Strauss company advertised in a disgusting and arrogant way about things which a Jewish person finds repellent.

“In order to express the pain of chareidi Jewry and to make a proper protest, we call on the public and especially the chareidi supermarket chains not to purchase these items until after Pesach in order that those involved should know how much we care about this and so that others should not trespass on matters regarding modesty and the sanctity of the Jewish nation.”

The limited and delayed response of the Badatz may be due to the close economic ties between the Badatz and the Strauss company, many of whose items hold the supervision of the Badatz.

The head of the Council of Community Rabbis, Rabbi Amichai Eliyahu (son of Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu) said that “one doesn’t need a survey to determine that most of the snacks in Israel reach families blessed with many children i.e. religious, chareidi and traditional families. It appears that the campaign leaders wanted to cause harm to the company which produces these snacks. Conversely they may think there are ‘transparent’ people whose values do not need to be respected. A third possibility is that they decided to sharpen tensions in Israeli society despite the possible economic loss.

“Its a shame that Doritos didn’t learn from the mistake of Ben and Jerry’s. We didn’t need a boycott in our home to decide that we are not bringing this snack to our house again, even though my kids unfortunately love it.”

Strange. If it meant that much let them take the loss and remove their hashgacha from the product.

Is the reason they only say until after that pesach in order to kill the boycott then?

What’s after Pesach? Honestly, I’m very, very disillusioned right now. I mean this is better than no protest at all but wouldn’t you think that those who consider themselves the champions of Yiddishkeit protesting many things they don’t like about the Israeli government wouldn’t you expect basic standards from themselves?

Why not a permanent boycott on this unhealthy unnecessary product. Having never tasted one I’ve boycotted them my whole life.
