YAAKOV M: Biden’s Mask Policy on Airplanes Not Based on Science

President Biden’s DOJ is refusing to end mask mandates on airplanes.

On Monday a judge struck down the unpopular mandate. In response, airline passengers and crew members were seen on video, laughing and celebrating in midair.

Now all Biden needs to do is NOT appeal. Yet the DOJ is appealing the ruling.

Which begs the question – Why are Democrats so obsessed with the mandate?

The mandate is not based on science. No evidence has been produced by the CDC to suggest that airplanes are more dangerous than other indoor gatherings. Sports arenas, restaurants, and wedding halls are just as crowded, yet have no mandate.

People around the country can huddle together and not wear masks (other than 3-5 year olds in NYC).

Yet the White House refuses to get the message. Why are they so stubborn about a mandate which is clearly not based on science?

The only feasible explanation is, since airplanes are under federal jurisdiction, they are one of the few remaining places that Biden can force people to mask (without risking a nationwide rebellion).

Here are the reasons NOT to force airline passengers to wear masks:

  1. Great filtration systems. According to Time Magazine: A research review published in September 2021, which analyzed 18 prior studies on in-flight spread of SARS-CoV-2, concluded that “transmission of SARS-CoV-2 can occur in aircrafts but is a relatively rare event….A 2020 study conducted for the U.S. Department of Defense—and carried out by researchers from Boeing and United Airlines, among others—found that aircraft ventilation and filtration systems reduced the risk of airborne SARS-CoV-2 exposure by more than 99%.”
  2. Many masks don’t help. According to the CDC and CNN, cloth masks are virtually useless to prevent Covid. Yet bizarrely, wearing a cloth mask fulfills the mandate, and they are worn by many passengers. Even surgical masks are not proven to prevent Covid. Not only are these masks ineffective, they may lull high-risk passengers into a false sense of security, and do more harm than good.
  3. High-risk people don’t need to fly. Flying commercial is not grocery shopping or visiting a doctor. People who are nervous about catching Covid are not forced to fly.
  4. People who are worried have options. Although not 100% effective, N95 masks appear to be pretty good at preventing the wearer from catching Covid.

After the judge’s ruling, Fox’s Peter Doocey asked Jen Psaki: Why are people in the White House not forced to wear a mask, but passengers on planes are?

Psaki replied, “I’m not a doctor you’re not a doctor…”, implying that only doctors can understand these irrational rules (a typical Democrat response when asked to explain nonsensical Covid rules).

There is a major flaw in the notion that only doctors can decide Covid rules. Medical students are not more capable of analyzing statistics and data, than, say, actuaries or data analysts. Doctors are taught about the pathology and physiology of a virus, like how it enters cells and causes health problems, but that does not mean they know how to prevent transmission better than anyone who studies the numbers.

Medical schools don’t teach whether the virus is more likely to spread on airplanes, buses, arenas, or living rooms – or whether masks are effective or which kind of masks are effective.

That’s why we need controlled clinical studies, something that the CDC and Dr. Fauci have been incredibly ineffective at.

In fact, the CDC spent one and a half years recommending cloth masks, long after they were known to be ineffective, and Senator Rand Paul (who happens to be a doctor), got banned from Youtube for warning people that they do not help. Now the CDC admits that Paul was correct.

It is time for Biden to find health experts who actually follow the science, and who value quality of life. Just because Democrats like to make rules, and their gut instinct tells them that masking is better than no masking, does not make it reality.

High-risk people don’t need to fly”
Such a “it’s all about me” view of life. In our highly mobile society, who do you think you are to decide that this group of people does not need to travel?
Do you think that high-risk people don’t have jobs, don’t have family obligations, don’t have other reasons to travel?

“There is a major flaw in the notion that only doctors can decide Covid rules. Medical students are not more capable of analyzing statistics and data, than, say, actuaries or data analyst”
Cute but intellectually dishonest. Medical students aren’t yet doctors and the doctors who are in the lead have years of post-graduate training in things like infectious disease and epidemiology.

What is Yaakov’s last name and what are his credentials? Is he a medical professional or an expert on infectious diseases or public health?

Democrats are anti science.

Of course it is based on science, Fauci supports it and Fauci is The Science.

I don’t believe the CDC or Fauci…as for Psaki, she’s full of it too.

Of course it’s not backed by science. It’s backed by politics.

Not true on several facts, and not valid reasoning.

Sitting shoulder to shoulder with an infectious person, the cabin ventilation system is not going to help very much. Similar for seats in the adjacent rows.

The cabin ventilation system is running when the plane is running. A half hour inside without the ventilation system at full operation is a good recipe for spreading disease, and not just covid19.

That some masks are better than others, means there should be a standard for what masks are worn, not therefore nobody wears a mask.

And wearing a mask is as much about the person you infect as yourself. Shulchan Aruch at the end of Choshen Mishpat compares that sort of behavior to spilling blood. If you are frum, in an epidemic you will wear a mask.

And finally, if you are not a scientist, nor a physician, nor a Rav, you should not have an opinion on this subject, and you should certainly not be exchanging advice with others who are not qualified to have an opinion.

Your responsibility is to do what the main-stream physicians advise, and it is up to them to decide whether it is, or to what extent it is, pekuach nefesh or otherwise adversely effects your health.
