NEW YORK (Yaakov M / VINnews) — The NYC Council needs to conduct better research when it comes to Jewish Holidays.

In a humiliating blunder, the city council confused Yom Kippur with Chanukah in a social media post.

The council posted a graphic on Instagram wishing Jews a “Happy Yom Kippur” alongside an image of a Menorah.

They later apologized on Twitter, after the mistake was exposed by Jewish reporter Jacob Kornbluh.

“We acknowledge the error of our previous post on #YomKippur and thank all those who brought it to our attention,” wrote the Council. “We sincerely hope all New Yorkers observing this Day of Atonement have an easy and meaningful fast.”

The Council’s Instagram page deleted the botched post and replaced it with a more apropos message wishing New York Jews a “g’mar chatima tovah”.

In addition to confusing the symbols, Kornbluh made the observation that Yom Kippur is not typically viewed by Jews as a “happy” and festive day, but rather a serious and solemn day of judgment and atonement.

I clearly see a prayer book and a shofer. The menorah is probably the oldest and most recognized symbol that represents the Jewish people and the Beis Hamikdosh. It was also lit daily and its significance has plenty to do with the holiest day of the year.

Stop looking for problems to nitpick on especially from people who dont know better. Want me to do the same to you? Well Yom Kippur is a yom tov and if you dont realize that you need to be happy on this day maybe you should discuss it with your Rabbi.

Menorah is a Jewish symbol. More than the star of David.

Ridiculous. That isn’t even a pic of a chanuka menora. I think ADL has too much time on their hands.

This is the same City Council that has made bail reform the law of the land. The same City Council that supports a woman’s right to murder her baby. The same City Council that legalized two women to marry each other.
This stupid card is the least of their problems.

To me it seems that the general public conflates the menorah as a symbol of Jewish life year round.

It’s time to disband the archaic city council and kick the mayor to the curb. Don’t defund the police, remove the politicians. Replace them with a 21 member parliamentary council replaceable every 4 years.

The local talk radio station in south Jersey mentioned this. How could New York, of all places, get this wrong?
