Crime is way down if you base your comparison on the murderous 1970s. Crime is up if you compare it to the covid-twisted past couple of years. Even now, property crime is down and auto theft has collapsed.
Of course the Uniform Crime Report lags by ten months and many police departments refuse to report crimes to the federal government. It is just hard to get numbers on crimes.
