LETTER: In defense of Trump, who was set up by Kanye West

37

Dear VIN,
I think that everyone is overreacting to President Trump having dinner with Nick Fuentes. This is not a big deal.

If you look at the facts, two things are clear:

  1. Trump has been a staunch supporter of Jews, perhaps more than any US president
  2. Trump never heard of Fuentes. He was clearly set up by Kanye

Let’s look at Trump’s record. He moved the embassy to Jerusalem, despite enormous pressure. Other countries soon followed, which was highly beneficial for Israel’s sovereignty.

Trump defunded the Palestinians, which likely saved hundreds of Jewish lives by preventing terror attacks. He brokered the Abraham Accords, pardoned Shalom Rubashkin, and issued an executive order combating antisemitism.

His record speaks for itself. Trump loves the Jews.

Plus, Trump’s own daughter and grandchildren, with whom he is extremely close, are practicing orthodox Jews.

(Incidentally, none of these things won him the support of the majority of American Jews. Sure, the frum community is overwhelmingly pro-Trump. But that is a tiny sliver of the population. Trump feels like Jews are ungrateful to him, and he has a point. Secular Jews put support of Democrats over their own community.)

Now, if we look at the facts, Trump was clearly set up by Kanye, an antisemite, who requested a meeting with the former president. Was the meeting poor judgment by Trump? Perhaps.

But Kanye has been a loyal supporter of Trump, and he is influential in segments of the black community. He is also conservative, and I’m sure a generous donor.

I do not condone Trump meeting with him, but at the same time, we can sympathize. It is classic politics, virtually all politicians associate with bad people for political reasons.

Unbeknownst to Trump, Kanye brought an acquaintance who is a vicious and repulsive antisemite (whom David Friedman referred to as scum). Like most Americans, Trump never heard of Fuentes. None of those facts are disputed.

So that meeting is not something that we can condemn Trump for. And it certainly does not mean that Trump “associates” with Fuentes or other white supremacists.

Why did Kanye bring Fuentes to the meeting? He clearly set Trump up. He has very few allies right now, he has been canceled by Adidas and the rest of the world.

So he created a scenario where Trump will be associated with Kanye, and be labeled an antisemite. They are now forever linked, two Jew-haters.

It certainly is the most likely narrative. (Incidentally, this entire outcry has turned the obscure and fringe Fuentes, who nobody ever heard of, into a household name, splattered throughout the media, which cannot be a good thing.)

Now, you can make the case that Trump should disavow Fuentes and renounce his views. But that is not how he rolls.

He mocks public figures, he makes fun of people’s lack of energy and their personal habits and mannerisms. He blasts people (both right and left) with whom he has had personal fights. But Trump rarely disavows anyone because of their political beliefs.

That is just not his character.

Is Trump an antisemite? No. Does he associate with antisemites? No.

He was trying to help a friend, and got trapped. Is he guilty of poor judgment? Probably. Should he blast Fuentes? Probably, but it’s not going to happen, and his lack of blasting him does not warrant the pummeling that he is receiving right now by virtually everyone on the planet.

I very much doubt Trump never heard of Fuentes as he’s frequently appeared on Fox programs, Trump’s favorite TV network. I have been aware of Fuentes for about 2 years from reading news articles and seeing Tweets, so I don’t believe Trump was unaware of Fuentes. I remember in 2016 when Trump denied knowing who David Duke was in 2016 after he had spoken about Duke several years earlier.
I don’t believe that an invited guest can bring 2 individuals to highly protected Mar a largo without them being vetted and Trump knowing who they were.
Why would Trump invite West aka Ye, a crazed anti Semite to his resort for a dinner meeting? And lastly, after years of lies about important and mundane matters, why should we believe Trump about this meeting?

I always read about those Jews that voted for and defended Hitler, I couldn’t understand it.
Now I’m not calling anyone Hitler, but whitewashing someone who calls for our death is sickening.

This letteris a lie. Holocaust denier Fuentes said Trump knows him. And after a week of Jew Hating by West, who attended many Trump campaign rallies, to be invited to Mar a lago? THIS IS A BIG DEAL.

Even if never heard of Nick. Trump will never apologize or show regret for this meeting. He won’t even say that he doesn’t approve of this Nick guy. So Trumps true colors will come out in the next few days.

Fuentes is not unknown. Once he found out, Trump should have blasted Fuentes. If it’s not his type to do that, that is a chisoron. Frum Jews support Trump. He knows that. The reasons you listed are correct. But Fuentes is a garbage, evil human. If he didn’t know, now he does.

As a former President with Secret Service protection, you vet your guests. Moreover, you can do things on behalf of Jews and still be tolerant of anti-semites. For Trump, it’s all about Trump.

I really am dissatisfied by this. Trump is better than this. I hope this is not like Martin Luther yemach shmo who professed to love Jews and then viciously turned on them when they would not support him. I am deeply disappointed in President Trump for meeting these menuvalim. Even if Fuentes was not involved to meet with Kanye ymach shmo so soon after his vile antisemitism is inexcusable and a strange thing to do. I still am Dan le laf zechus until otherwise shown. But a terrible thing to do

If you can fall for such a setup, that me and you would not fall for, you are not qualified to be president. He was great to the Jews and Israel when he was President and we have Hakaros Hatov. In our history we have had kings that were great supporters and then turned on us. He should have never accepted a meeting with him, now that he did we need to open our eyes and be cautious.

Sickening that a Jewish publication would publish such a thing. We are justifying people meeting with anti-semites and they’re not condemning it because this is how they roll? What is wrong with vin that they think this is worthy of publication?

The road to hell its paved with good intentions.

None of his pro Israel actions negates one iota the harm his freighting antisemitic statements does, demanding US Jews to be loyal to a foreign country. Which is intrinsically plain vile antisemitic.

Trump should not have had those characters over but his doing so is not something to overplay. If he weren’t Trump the reaction would be far more muted. Plenty of Democrat politicians have met and had a lot closer relationships with anti-Semites and it was explained away as “politics” or “not an indication of agreement with everything they say” No justification for treating Trump differently.

Trump shoots from the hip when he speaks – he was definitely set up – did not check who’s who before he met with them.

Thanks for sharing this important counter-perspective, a counterpoint to the enthusiastic Trump bashing the liberal media is indulging in now. I am not someone who says Trump is always right, but neither is he always wrong. Not everything that happens around him is deep, dark conspiracy. Some things can just be attributed to lack of knowledge, deep thinking, and good judgement.

Who cares. Trump won’t win in any case. I don’t see why this should be a debate when there are way bigger issues. I personally don’t believe Donald Trump is an anti-Semite but he will also not say the truth nor will he do anything that feels he will lose voters which is in this case would be distancing right wingers.

But what’s the difference? Why should we care so much about this?

I agree with the author. Trump has proven himself as a friend of the Jewish community many times. Let not one error in judgement outweigh all the good he has done for us.
