JERUSALEM (VINnews) — Likud and United Torah Judaism (UTJ)are close to compromise on the controversial Draft Law issue, according to Israeli media reports. The compromise will be brought to the Council of Torah Sages of the Chasidic community, who made specific demands in the wake of the elections.

The chareidim insist on the draft law being identical to the Tal law, which did not prescribe sanctions if the targets of chareidi draft were not reached.

During a meeting with Likud representatives, a compromise was reached that the coalition agreement will state that “no person will be arrested or jailed for Torah study in Israel.”

Moreover Likud showed willingness to legislate a basic law which would recognize the value of Torah study, which would enable the state to respond to Supreme Court claims that the draft law harms the value of equality contained in the Basic Law: Human Dignity and Liberty. The basic law would thus legislate the preferred status of yeshiva students and their exemption from conscription to the army.

If the Likud accept chareidi demands, the matter could lead to significant progress towards a signing of the coalition agreement between the parties, effectively concluding the formation of the government.

Secular Israelis go to the army before college. If secular studies are equal to Torah study, yeshiva students would go to the army at 17 or 18 years of age.

if you want to know how much we.. Cheredim (Chasidim specsifically) value the Torah then just look at how much we pay our Melamdim , Rebbeim and Magidei Shiur, compared to how much we spend on Rebishe Weddings and their vacations and their private jet trips

sure we want Chilonim to Value Torah, but how much are Value do we give it??

talk is cheap, as the saying goes, put your money where your mouth is…..

Great News – now the not-religious will open their own yeshivahs, and let anyone who does not want to serve and risk his life to sit the 3 years in a Beis hamedrish .

Sit 8 hours a day in a study hall, who is going to say what part he of the Torah he studies, maybe Moshe Mendelsohn’s writing, and at night go to school and take courses in Law, Architecture etc.. Then get married and he proudly skirted the army, did not risk his life, nor had the hardship of enlistment. He enjoyed his years studying and also has a degree to go wit.

A country must be fair with all its citizens. The army can be a voluntary

Human Dignity and Liberty should be seen as a Heritage that G-d bestowed upon us, even before we arrived at Sinai (a day of rest, freedom from bondage, the laws of Justice given at Marah, etc.) I sincerely hope that these values will be taught, and practiced, by the Scions of the Yeshivas.
