JERUSALEM (VINnews) — Likud and UTJ’s negotiating teams have continued to focus on one of the last issues remaining between them, the draft law. According to the latest updates on the negotiations, Agudath Yisrael, the chasidic faction of UTJ, have withdrawn their demand to immediately legislate a law removing all sanctions or enlistment quotas from the chareidi community, but the compromise being discussed would allow for the legislation of a new basic law.

The law would take into account the importance of Torah study throughout Jewish history and would establish the value of Torah study as a supreme value of Jewish heritage. In light of this law, a new and revised draft law will be concluded before the 2023 budget is passed.

The new draft law will be “agreed by all coalition members”, as demanded by the Degel Hatorah faction. Agudath Yisrael say that their agreement to drop the draft law for the time being is due to the new basic law being more important than the draft law, as it is the first time that the state of Israel will recognize the intrinsic value of Torah study. They added that when the draft law will be proposed they will ensure that it does not contain sanctions or quotas for chareidi enlistment.

Including the value of Torah study doesn’t have to mean that you can learn as long as you want to avoid the draft, and end up never serving.

you can not legislate being machshiv limud hatorah

only seeing role models who are machshiv will produce a generation of machshivei

coercion and draconian legislation will only bring about an increase in sinah for yahadus

beware of over reaching (also beware of taking revenge .. binpol oivecha al tismach)

Cant have it one way. When others will say I am diong so and so which is of value, becoming a doctor or accountant, now I also don’t have to serve The whole question is fairness, Torah ca maybe push off serving, but not make it unfair to others.
When one day the not religious rebel about this unfair double society – what do we do.
