JERUSALEM (VINnews) — A stormy session took place Monday morning in the Knesset’s law committee, as the coalition brought its controversial judicial reforms to vote in the committee. Opposition MKs climbed on tables, sang “We have no other country” and tried to disturb proceedings in other ways, shouting and heckling until they were removed from the committee room.

Prior to the session, Law committee director Simcha Rothman (Religious Zionism) responded in a media declaration to the initiative presented by President Herzog on Sunday evening. Rothman welcomed the call for a real discussion of ways to improve the judicial system and its relationship with other governing bodies but refused to delay legislation on the issue.

Rothman claimed that “the gaps between the framework presented by the president and the bill proposals which Minister Levin and myself submitted are not minor but also not too great and certainly do not justify the apocalypse-style prophecies and cries of distress about the end of democracy which we have been hearing.”

Rothman added that “there are parts of the president’s plan which are acceptable and others which need to be reframed to solve the problems we are experiencing and which we have promised our voters to deal with.” He added that “I believe we can narrow the gaps and reach a plan with broad agreement as Minister Levin said at the beginning of this procedure.”

Rothman said that he is willing to sit with any member of the opposition without preconditions to promote mutual discussion and reach a national agreement over the reforms. He called on Supreme Court Chief Justice Esther Hayut to join the discussion without preconditions. He added that “we have a historic opportunity to fix injustices, restore faith in the judicial system and be in a place out fathers dreamed of.”

I don’t undertsand what the delay is.Why all talks and back and forths. We all know what we want. Pass it and be over with. With these types of thin gs the more you debate and shlep, the more people will protest and make problems. Just pass the changes already ands stop schlepping. You can always change something later. But lets just do it already
