JERUSALEM (VINnews) — Rabbi Moshe Sternbuch referred after his weekly shiur to the earthquake which occurred in Southern Turkey, killing tens of thousands of people. Rabbi Sternbuch entreated his students “not to accept shallow explanations from people on the street but to look at the matter from a Torah perspective.”

Rabbi Sternbuch quoted the prophecy in Zecharia which describes the destruction which will take place in Jerusalem prior to the war of Gog U’Magog, and says that “houses will be demolished, half of Jerusalem will go into exile.”

Rabbi Sternbuch added; “Who is not afraid of this? Nobody can be assured of which half of Jerusalem he will be in, the half that will be exiled or the other half,  and therefore we need to grab more and more mitzvos during this period and especially easy mitzvos like Talmud Torah where every word is deemed a separate mitzva….

“We must look at the earthquake which happened in Turkey and Syria as ‘the voice of Hashem with power’ proclaiming ‘see what I can do’, and as the gemara says in Yevamos (63a) “no calamity befalls the world unless it is for Israel as it says “I exterminated nations  ruined their towers and destroyed their streets”,  and it says “I said: at least you will see Me and take a lesson from this.”

“This is a warning from Hashem that if we destroy the holy Torah chas veshalom, he will destroy our homes, and therefore we must heed the call of Hashem and add more and more mitzvos.”

Rabbi Sternbuch also referred to some people who explained the huge scope of the earthquake with so many dead as a way of showing Hashem’s love for Israel, that he brings such a calamity to Turkey and not to Israel. Rabbi Sternbuch disagreed: “This is not the way and this is not what I saw from the gedolim, they would see a form of ‘justice’ in this, that Hashem is showing us such a great disaster among the nations to warn us that the time will come when he will punish the wicked people and this arouses us to Teshuva and to fear divine retribution.”

One comment here is dumber than the next. All I can say is that I once lived in Har Nof many years before R Shternbach joined Aidah. He was always warm, welcoming and pleasant. He eagerly shared his time with everyone and didn’t ask anyone for anything. The type of person you want in your midst.

Everybody uses this unfortunate earthquake to bolster his own Religious Beliefs. It’s like a game. Why can’t we just have Emunah Psutah?
