Police claim that the terrorist was undergoing a search as he sought to enter Temple Mount after the site was closed for the day. During the course of the search , the terrorist grabbed the personal pistol of the policeman and fired off two shots during the scuffle, which fortunately did not hit anyone. Police, who felt that the man constituted a danger to them, shot at him and eliminated him.

The terrorist, Mohammed Al-Asibi, was a 26-year-old resident of the Bedouin town of Houra in the Negev who was a medical student. Family members claimed that he was not a terrorist and had intervened in an argument between police and another person near the Temple Mount. The family has demanded surveillance footage of the incident. Bedouin leaders decided on a two-day strike, claiming that police had killed Al-Asibi in cold blood.

Jerusalem District Commander Doron Turgeman has asked the central department of the Jerusalem district to investigate the incident. All policemen present at the scene say that the man snatched the weapon and shot a number of shots before he was neutralized.
