David Yitzchak HYD Volunteered With Special Needs Kids, Wrote: ‘Be Good, Just Good Without Showiness’

JERUSALEM (VINnews) —  On the day when IDF Sergeant-Major David Yitzchak HyD is brought to his final rest at Jerusalem’s Mt. Herzl, Yehonadav Cohen will celebrate his Bar-Mitzvah.

Yehonadav had a special attachment to David, who used to meet him and gladden him at the informal club set up for special needs kids in Beit El. The club was called Nahal, an acronym for Notnim Chiyuch Layeled (giving a smile to a child) and Eliyahu Cohen, Yehonadav’s father says that David used to give him lots of radiant smiles. A picture from Yehonadav’s 12th birthday, where David can be seen carrying him and smiling at a summer camp last year, demonstrates the good heart of this soldier who had signed on to continue his combat service in order to protect the people of Israel.

Eliyahu remembered that even while he was in the army, David would come and pick up Yehonadav on Yom Kippur afternoon in order to ease the fast for his parents.

A piece of paper from David’s writings reveals a person with deep aspirations for himself:

“Monday- counsellor, helping at home, bike, time wasting, Har Bracha….

‘Be good, just good, without showiness and ostentation, without getting muddled, just be good

‘Don’t stop thinking about the goal’

‘Hiking is fine, when you’re alone you have lots of time to think…..

‘Remember that soon you won’t be here, so take courage….

‘Be quality, quality’

‘Don’t look for postures, frivolities and pleasures, just be good at everything…

‘Don’t be a wimp, maintain a strong character. Don’t be ashamed to do what you have to do to attain the goal, to be good, to do good..’
