The Vest Shortages – An Urgent Need

I just got off of the phone with a soldier – originally from England.  He is part of a Golani unit combined with a Tzanchanim unit at the Lebanese border.  However, they are in very short supply of three things:  A] Ceramic plates for the bullet proof vests B] Bullet Proof vests and C] Ballistic helmets/

The cost is 250,000 New Israeli Shekel which is about $63000

The unit number is #### Nimchak for chatmal unit [to protect the local area] –  etzba galil the ####  area – they are switching now with the other soldiers and the border is heating up. Yesterday 4 terrorists tried crossing the border.

There are 100 men in the company – if they get enough equipment they will give it to 400 others as well.

WHY DON’T THEY HAVE THIS BASIC EQUIPMENT?

I asked this very basic question:  Why don’t they have the equipment?  He answered that although the IDF is very good in the field, they are not so good at the logistics of things when 300,000 plus people show up.  They are trying their best, but are only about 80% effective at the logistics part. He himself had to wait 2 hours for some of his things and he didn’t get much of what he needed.   They do have it somewhere, but retrieval is something that the IDF needs to work on..

This particular Golani, his wife and two kids was in Bournemouth,  England for Yontiff. In shul, he heard what had happened rachmana litzlan and that it was a very serious thing – akin to the Yom Kippur War.  He went home as quickly as possible and did not even tell his father – who was davening for the amud..

He told someone else to tell his father and family that he was leaving. He left immediately and got his passport. “R” made it to the airport with 15 other soldiers.. arrived at 4:00 PM. He got his his ticket at 9:00 PM and made it to Ben Gurion Airport at 5ooAM.  He got his Glock 19 from a gun safe.. and made it to his base by 2:00 PM.  Everyone was shocked that he had made it so quickly.

This is the vest they wish to buy.  The Israeli company is totally sold out

This author checked into it and vouches for the validity of this cause. I don’t think it is tax deductible, but this is the fastest way to get the equipment to them. If anyone is able to donate to make it so much safer for these soldiers who left their families to protect other yiddin – a paypal link is found below.  Copy it to paypal.com

I am about to put $6000 on my credit card – to get the vests and the ceramic inserts to them faster. [The inserts were just donated I am told] Two soldiers r”l were killed yesterday in the north.  I trust the people involved implicitly.  [In general this is something to be wary of]

Where will they be bought from? Are there stores in Israel that sell them but won’t give them to the IDF? How is it quicker to purchase (where?) & deliver them than sending people around to collect this equipment & delivery it where it’s needed?
    Something doesn’t make sense.
R” Hoffman, please help us understand.

In the 1990s, Israel’s Army did not have enough Bullet-Proof-vests for all of its soldiers. WHY has this problem NOT been solved, 25 years later?

The army has put out notifications that there is no shortage in the army of supplies or food.
That everyone will receive everything they need to do their jobs and complete their missions.
The problem with outsourcing is that the vests or anything else bought from outside might not be the specific things they need.

PLEASE leave this for the army to take care of. If anything, send money to the FIDF or Lone Soldier Society.

What a horrible thing to say. So you actually believe you know better than Hashem?
He put these soldiers into non religious families. They have done nothing wrong. But you have. You have committed Simas Chinam. Your religious position is not better than theirs.

During the 2nd Beis Hamikdash most Jews didn’t keep Shabbos either. But that was not mentioned as a reason for the distruction.

    Time for Teshuva is now…..

    I found this article posted
Critical advice for all donor drives and equipment purchases
Lessons learnt from the last four days of organizational support

    There are logistical complexities that people may not realize, which may explain why we’ve seen pictures of supplies being packed in US, but few images of bags being unloaded in Israel. Some actual *examples from today*;

    1. A cargo plane full of equipment landed in Ben-Gurion with palettes of supplies, but is currently being held by the government due to lack of *proper paperwork and authorization*. While the plane is most likely full of helpful donations, Israeli security and procedure is obviously still needed.
    2. A well-meaning request came in for “magazines.” This led to several donors showing up with 30-round Magpul rifle magazines, as well as Chabad donating Chabad magazines. While both are definitely appreciated, it is illegal to export rifle magazines without proper storage and authorization. *Lack of clarity of item specifications is leading to waste*. (Similarly with drones, vests, plate carriers, boots, etc.)
    3. A unit in the south received a generous donation of black tactical vests. However, Israeli military vests needs to be olive green in order to help soldiers identify each other and avoid the risk of friendly-fire. The soldiers were not allowed to wear these since Hamas wears black vests and it makes it difficult to differentiate between ally and enemy. The money, time, effort, logistics and organization involved in delivering those were sadly wasted, and the proper equipment wasn’t delivered. *Asking clarifying questions and confirming item details will make these efforts more successful.*
    4. Shipping batteries by plane is hazardous and regulated. This has resulted in storehouses and collection points being flooded with AA, AAA, and other battery types that can’t be moved. In addition to the wasted funds, logistics coordinators have commented on the impact it has on their need for physical space.

    *Ways to help are;*
    – *Providing clarification on gear specifics* (E.g., “Gloves” can mean many things. Winter gloves, tactical gloves, half finger tactical gloves, medical gloves, etc.). Push and ask for details from the source of the request
    – *Spending more time to ensure it gets into the right hands*. (At least one cargo plane is sitting in Ben Gurion with supplies, being held by customs as it does not have proper authorization.) Paperwork is less exciting than packing, but essential for everything else to succeed
    – *Updating lists of equipment* to keep collections relevant
    – Verifying that gear requests cannot, or will not, be filled by Israel independently, so that funds are not needlessly spent
    – Connecting roadblocks with people/resources that can solve them

    A helpful method for tracking needs and progress has been to fill out this format before purchasing goods to ensure they end up in the right hands;
    o Division name:
    o Battalion name:
    o Company name:
    o Team name:
    o Verified gear request:
o Point of contact: (Ideally a logistics officer who knows what the unit has and needs)
    o Contact info/Phone number:
o Point of contact #2 : (Someone who will answer the phone)
    o Contact info/Phone number for POC #2 :

People across the world are contributing to this effort, and we all feel the need to jump in .

Just spoke to my cousin on WhatsApp stationed at the Gaza border it’s true there is a shortage of vests and helmets but there are plane loads of supplies heading there from the US as we speak so I think waiting for a few days is the best move

Which is more important, money for religious schools, or outfitting your reserve combatants? Since I stared to read this blog, I don’t remember anyone including myself writing about this problem. Shame on all of us, me included.
