REPORT: Queens Yeshiva Sheltering Illegals on Behalf of Mayor Adams

QUEENS (VINNews) — According to the NY Post, a Queens yeshiva has agreed to shelter illegals, in return for compensation from Mayor Eric Adams.

Struggling and overwhelmed by the surge of migrants due to President Biden’s open borders policies, the Adams’ administration issued a plea to houses of worship this week, asking them to become shelters for undocumented migrants, or, to use the term President Biden used in last week’s address, illegals.

The mayor’s office sent out a letter asking religious groups to voluntarily provide daytime centers for 150 illegals in exchange for up to $54,000 a month. It also asked them to house 19 other illegals overnight, for up to $35,500, according to the Post.

One such shelter opened in Queens this week in Maspeth, which will provide beds and daily meals to 15 single adults, according to the paper. The facility formerly operated as a shul, but has not had an active congregation for decades. The yeshiva took over the building in 2017. It should be noted that this building is not where the actual yeshiva is located, and many miles away from the actual yeshiva and its bochurim. It appears that right now it is an empty building.

The Adams’ administration claims the faith-based shelter system will be much cheaper than its current emergency contracts. The average nightly cost of housing migrants was $383 last summer.

City Hall spokesperson Kayla Mamalek said, “As Mayor Adams has said, it is not enough to be parishioners, we must also be practitioners, and congregations that participate in our faith bed program are doing just that.”

The city is willing to pay up to $54,000 a month for religious centers to shelter illegals between a.m. and 7 p.m. daily, to cover janitors, coordinators, background checks for workers and laundry and other services.

Houses of worship that house migrants overnight can be reimbursed up to $35,500 a month.

Centers will be required to have showers (six single stalls for daytime care and at least two stalls for overnight care) or the ability to add as well as space to prepare meals and for migrants to eat.

Queens Democrat Councilman Bob Holden slammed the move as “completely unacceptable.”

“It’s an absolute disgrace that our city wastes millions on people who shouldn’t be here while our veterans and citizens are left homeless and forgotten,” he said.

“City Hall for years ignored a faith-based approach to housing our own, but have no problem rolling out the red carpet for migrants,” he added. “What a travesty.”
