JERUSALEM (VINnews) — The crisis regarding the draft law for yeshiva students is still threatening the current government, with both Defense Minister Gallant and Minister Benny Gantz intent on establishing a law which will require more charedim to enlist.

Due to the urgency of the issue, and after the high court ruled recently that if the government is not drafting charedim it cannot continue to fund their yeshivos and kollelim, the charedi parties have been working on a framework which will be acceptable to the gedolim as well as to a majority of the coalition.

The new framework will include enlistment goals which will grow yearly, as well as economic sanctions if the charedi enlistment numbers do not reach these goals.

The yeshiva students who study full-time will be exempt from the draft, and yeshiva students who enlist will be given the option of joining police or emergency organizations like United Hatzalah during their service.

Yeshiva students who are not learning or who learn half day will be subject to army service or national service in special frameworks which will be set up for them. Additionally, all charedim up to the age of 35 who are not in yeshiva frameworks will be required to do some national service in accordance with the needs of the country.

The parties have yet to establish the number of students required annually and this will be discussed in a meeting between them and Minister Gantz’s bureau.

The charedi parties already met with Rabbi Dov Landau as well as Rabbi Moshe Hillel Hirsch to discuss the possible frameworks for the law.

In the meantime, the government will provide the court with a timetable for establishing a new draft law and the actions being taken to promote such a law. Due to this timetable the government will request not to begin drafting yeshiva students until 1 July 2024 in order to reach a framework which can be legislated.

This will show the court that the government seeks to implement the demand for charedi enlistment which the court required in its recent decisions.

So I was in Eilat this week for a bit of rest. I saw no fewer than 12 Charedi bochurim walking on the Tayelet. Last time I checked Bein Hazmanim doesn’t start until Rosh Choesh Nissan, even then I would wonder what Bnei Yeshiva are doing in Eilat. Should these Bochurim be arrested for draft evasion? What do you think go through peoples minds when “sightings” like this occur especially during war time?

You will never get the charedim to serve in the IDF by force. Taking away money won’t help. Stop being silly. Ein mah lasot. You would be much smarter to slowly nudge them on their own free will. Since Oct 7 mnay more joined willingly. At least set up things that aren’t part of the IDF but serve the public. You can be smart about this or dumb and get nowehere

Not serving in the IDF by Charedim has nothing to do with if they do or don’t study full time Torah. Serving in the IDF is a pathway and a guarantee to secularism. Those Frum Yidden in Israel who are of the true belief that a jewish state before the coming of Moshicah is forbidden will never serve in such an army.

“Yeshiva students who are not learning or who learn half day will be subject to army service or national service in special frameworks which will be set up for them. Additionally, all charedim up to the age of 35 who are not in yeshiva frameworks will be required to do some national service in accordance with the needs of the country.” In other words, as Rav Bloch noted, game over and the Zionists have won, like in the WZO vote here 4 years ago. The truth is that this is so horrific and against the Torah (and against the deal that the Zionists made with Agudah back then) that one wonders how much longer Hashem can possibly allow the Zionist State to continue.

Spend some time in E.Y. and you will discover there are different strata to society. It seems that the young people that dress as Yeshiva Bochrim are at the top. I notice they wear the latest suits, hats and fine leather shoes or boots. I spent time in a Hotel that was not in the main cluster. There was a nightly dating scene and all were dressed to the nines, most Israelis that work can never afford this lifestyle.
