Report: Charedi Parties Agree To Draft 25% Of Annual Cycle To IDF, 50% In Future Cycles

JERUSALEM (VINnews) — In the wake of the public debate over the new Draft Law, a dramatic proposal has allegedly been put forward by Charedi parties to begin drafting approximately 25% of yeshiva students who come of age each year, and later raise the percentage to nearly 50%, which would amount to 6,000 yeshiva students, Israel Hayom reported.

In marathon talks over the draft law between the charedi parties and the Likud and other government partners, it was agreed to start with a draft of 25% of every year’s recruitment cycle, numbered at some 12,600 per year. After a few years the number could even go up to nearly 50% or 6000 recruits per year. Currently only about 1200 “charedim” per year enlist in the IDF, most of whom are either former charedim or come from national-religious charedi homes.

Yisrael Hayom surmised that either Oct. 7th had changed something in the charedi world or that the charedi parties are concerned about the stopping of budgets to yeshiva students and are therefore willing to make an effort to promote a broader draft law.

Yet despite the charedi willingness to compromise, the law is still being delayed due to Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, who has tied his support of the bill to Minister Benny Gantz’s approval of it. Gantz opposes the current draft bill.

According to data quoted by Interior Minister Moshe Arbel in a recent interview, over 1,000 young men who are exempted from army service because “their Torah is their occupation” are not in the yeshivas at all.

Many others are registered in yeshivas which haredim refer to as “yeshivas for drop-outs,” attended by yeshiva students who are not capable of learning but who are registered in these yeshivas in order to avoid enlistment. The haredi representatives engaged in discussions on the Draft Law are aware of this.

Unlikely this is true. Why do I believe this to be untrue? Because the Gedolim won’t support it and it would be the demise of Chareidi political parties. Some commentators would like that, others wouldn’t.

Rambam’s Hilchot Shabbat, chapter 2, paragraph 23 teaches what to do if non-Jews come with clear intention to murder us. This quote from Rambam teaches that ALL able-bodied Jews [Col Yisrael] must fight against the invaders, even if it means violating Shabbat, and it is forbidden to wait until after Shabbat to fight them.

Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan [ZTL ZYA] said this in his
HANDBOOK OF JEWISH THOUGHT, volume II,
chapter 3, paragraph 24, top of page 23:
“Experience has shown us that when Jews
are not ready to defend and die for their fellows,
an even greater number are killed in the end.”

You are all speaking from an American charedi perspective. Maybe there is more to it than you realize or understand

Rambam’s Hilchot Melachim UMilchamot,
chapter 7, end of paragraph 4:
When the war is a Milchmet Mitzvah,
all Jews [HaCol] go out [to fight the enemy],
even a groom [a man who was recently married]
from his room, and a bride from her bridal canopy [chupah].

I’m not convinced the IDF actually wants so many charedim. Over time it would change the makeup of the entire army with top generals being charedi. I’m not convinced they want that, so let’s see if they actually end up recruiting what they ask for.

The whole thing is crazy- they are not going voluntarily. There has to be a forced draft – go to the army or go directly to jail.

This is a smoke screen to push it off. Okay! Okay! we are going, we will send 50% and then in 3 years we will see nothing happened – then it is back to the drawing board to do it again.

If this is true, there is some game or loophole thats being played. There is no way that even 25% will ever serve. This whole thing is a waste of time. The govt has to give it up. Yes its not fair but ein mah lasut

It should be 25% that are exempt , not 25% who serve. If they can’t be forced , allow learning and davening in jail . They can learn 24/7 over there .
