WASHINGTON D.C (VINnews)-President Trump said he will posthumously award conservative activist Charlie Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom, following Kirk’s assassination last week during a campus event in Utah.

Kirk, 31, was fatally shot Sept. 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University. The founder of Turning Point USA, Kirk was a prominent voice on the right and a close ally of Trump.
A public memorial service is scheduled for Sept. 21 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, which seats more than 60,000 people. Turning Point USA said doors will open at 8 a.m. and the service will begin at 11 a.m.
Trump told supporters he intends to attend the ceremony. While he pledged to give Kirk the nation’s highest civilian honor, it was not immediately clear whether the presentation will take place during the stadium memorial or at a separate event.
“We’re going to give him the Presidential Medal of Freedom,” Trump said in remarks, calling Kirk a patriot who “inspired millions.”
The White House has not released further details about the award ceremony.
